A major crackdown, called Operation Coachman, stopped 1,350 school run vehicles and found nearly a quarter were unfit for ferrying kids. Four per cent of minibuses stopped were so dangerous that they should not have been on the road. And around 500,000 youngsters were travelling in cars without proper restraints.
The shocked officers also found overcrowded cars and poorly maintained buses. Of 185 minibuses stopped, dozens had faults, and seven were so dangerous they were taken off the road immediately. One car had five children in the back, and officers discovered a wheel on a school bus held on by 'finger tight' nuts.
