Call for an end to initial confusion

Don’t get bogged down in alphabet soup – that’s the message for car manufacturers from the FIA Foundation

What does it all mean?

17th June 2007

The road safety charity is calling on companies to adopt a generic name for electronic stability control and end the confusion caused by a glut of different abbreviations, such as ESC, ESP, VSC and VDC.

Director General David Ward, promoting the foundation’s ‘Choose ESC’ campaign, said that consumers are baffled by all the different names in use for the active safety system.

The Foundation wants ESC fitted as standard to all vehicles by 2012, and condemned manufacturers who bundle the technology in with other features. “ESC should be offered as a stand-alone option,” said Ward.
