Ferraris at the double!

Italian supercar maker Ferrari’s plans for the future appear to concentrate on efforts to develop two model line-ups

By Paul Bailey

12th July 2007

The first will include hardcore drivers’ machines – including the current 599 GTB Fiorano and F430 – while the second will major on grand tourers, led by the 612 Scaglietti.

Top of the bill for the comfort-oriented range is a new rear-wheel-drive model with V8 power. Codenamed the ‘2+’, the front-engined Ferrari will be designed to complement the 612 Scaglietti, and is tipped to be offered as a soft-top, too.

Its name derives from its configuration, as the car will be offered as a two-seater with room in the boot for two golf bags, or a full 2+2 with less luggage space.

There’s no official word yet on what the new model might look like, but the Chiaroscuro concept (image) shows how a Ferrari GT shape could develop the looks of the 612. Expect to learn more about the new car in 2008.

For drivers who want the ultimate thrills, the brand’s super sports line-up will get a new addition this year. At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the F430 Challenge Stradale will make its world debut, featuring an uprated gearbox and a 204kg weight saving over the standard machine.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Lamborghini is testing a new model of its own (below). A white Gallardo with a different exhaust and a distinctive engine note was spied at the Nürburgring. Insiders say Lambo is trialling a new entry-level V8 for its F430 rival. More Gallardo images here
