This big-wheeled scooter is well worth looking at if you’re looking to take the strain out of commuting. As with the famous London street with which it shares its name, the Carnaby is at the cutting edge. Piaggio has taken styling cues from sports bikes at the rear, with a wide back tyre, while it comes in eye-catching colours.
But the newcomer is not all show and no go. Under the seat is Piaggio’s familiar four-stroke LEADER engine, which provides swift performance. However, it’s a little harsh and raspy when nearing top speed. Large 16-inch rims ensure the Carnaby is sure-footed, inspiring confidence when cornering.
Drivers switching from four to two wheels will also appreciate the powerful disc brakes front and rear. However, the bike’s sharp handling makes for a bone-jarring ride, which is most noticeable over big bumps and ripples. For tall riders, comfort is also an issue, as the sculpted seat isn’t that large.
Another downside is the woeful under-seat storage, which is really only good for a very small open-face helmet or a security chain. This is one scooter that really needs a top box – an extra you will pay £84.99 for. Nevertheless, the Carnaby is an ideal choice for drivers who opt for a scooter to save money on fuel and avoid traffic jams.
