There’s a new coupé at Mercedes...and Auto Express’s spy photographers have the picture to prove it.
This is the world’s first look at the manufacturer’s new CLK, which was caught on test in Germany. Based on a blend of the chassis technology that underpins the latest Mercedes C-Class and E-Class, the car will make its world debut in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
It’s longer and wider than at present, as company engineers aim to address criticisms of the current generation’s ride quality and handling; the existing CLK struggles to match class-leading opponents such as the latest BMW 3-Series Coupé and new Audi A5 in this respect.
Under the bonnet, a range of fresh engines is expected to appear. These should include new direct-injection SGI petrol powerplants, which prom- ise reduced CO2 emissions as well as improved fuel economy.
As a result, it’s anticipated that the new two-door will carry a slight price premium over the outgoing machine. The entry-level version is likely to start at around £30,000.
