Imagine your dream car. Now draw it! If your sketch is starting to resemble the scribblings of a nine-year-old child – fear not. It’s easier to get your ideas sketched on paper than you might think – especially with our useful step-by-step guide.

We picked the brains of one of the top car stylists in the industry, Wayne Burgess – chief designer of Jaguar’s stunning new XF – to find out exactly how it is done.

Here he explains in easy-to-follow stages his tips on how to draw the supermodel perfectly, pointing out the subtleties of the design along the way... Try it yourself if you get a quiet moment during the Christmas holidays.

Design for life

So how did Wayne find such a plum job? “A lot of hard graft,” he says. “After a foundation course at my sixth form college, I did the undergraduate transportation design course at Coventry University. I first worked for LTI, maker of the London taxi, then a host of car companies, before landing a job with Jaguar in 1998.”

Wayne explained what he looks for in an aspiring designer. “First and foremost is the natural ability to draw. You need a remarkable level of accuracy. Secondly, you have to be bursting with ideas.” If you possess these two talents already, Wayne advises. “Get yourself on a transport design course at university and commit to it fully.”

And if you’re lucky enough to succeed in the world of car design, there’s lots to look forward to: “Launching the car you have spent five years pouring your heart and soul into is a fantastic feeling.”
