Now Subaru joins space race

Exiga is based on Impreza platform and has space for seven people.

Subaru Exiga

23rd June 2008

Japanese giant Subaru plans to muscle in on the MPV market with the new Exiga. The seven-seater plugs a gap in the line-up, and is based on a modified version of the Impreza and Forester platform.

It was developed by the same team that created the Forester, and in the early stages of its design, Subaru’s engineers were working on both projects at the same time. The Exiga has a more distinctive nose than the recently launched Impreza, and also features the longest wheelbase ever to appear on a Subaru. Inside, passengers benefit from a full-length panoramic sunroof, while there are seats for seven. The dashboard also takes its inspiration from the current Impreza and Forester models.

Although the Japanese-market version is offered with a 2.0-litre petrol engine only, the fact that its underpinnings are shared with the Forester means Subaru’s recently developed boxer diesel could easily be installed. However, the range-topping GT model – featuring a 221bhp turbocharged petrol motor – is also likely to appeal to owners of the old Impreza Sportwagon.

Sadly, British buyers could have a long wait before the Exiga hits showrooms. A spokesman for Subaru UK told us: “There are no plans to bring the new model to Europe, although that could change.

“If enough importers feel there’s a market for it, then a European-spec car could be here in a couple of years.”
