Becker 7827 sat-nav - tested

New Becker fails to deliver on promise of its good looks.

sat nav

06th September 2008

Producing a sat-nav that stands out from the hundreds on the market isn’t easy. Yet this latest model from Becker really catches the eye.

There is no questioning the style of the 7827, from the high-gloss piano black panels to the glowing red edges. Sadly, the same can’t be said of the user interface, which we found confusing.

The back button/power switch is also counter-intuitive as it is the only non-touchscreen control, while the points of interest crowd the route and made following directions tricky. Also, while routing was accurate and quick, when navigating the menus the unit often paused. If we deviated, it initially chose a U-turn, too.

Yet volume was impressive – we could easily hear instructions above our car stereo. The mount isn’t as solid as the rest of the unit, though, and the charger didn’t fit all our cars. So while the 7827 isn’t perfect, it’s adequate – and it looks tempting with Halfords’ current half-price £119.99 offer.

Problems? Slow-witted in its calculations and comes with a confusing interface.
So why buy? Styling is great, and unit has decent mapping accuracy.
