Filling stations in the UK could soon have plug-in ‘pumps’ to top up electric cars.
The Petrol Retailers’ Association (PRA) argues that’s the best way to get more battery vehicles on
the road. But PRA chief Ray Holloway says the electricity should be solar-powered, too.
Holloway’s comments follow Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s recent announcement that the Government is pledging £100million of investment in electric vehicles over the next five years in a bid to encourage more drivers to convert to the eco-friendly technology.
But Holloway claims these vehicles are not as green as people believe. “The electricity is still largely generated by burning fuel,” he said. “We need to build solar panels on forecourt canopies, or windmills at the site, to power the plug sockets. That’s what the Government should consider.”
He added motorists could take a break and shop while they wait for their cars to recharge.
