Hidden beneath those covers is the Tesla Model S – an all-electric family saloon designed to rival the BMW 5-series. This is the most revealing look yet at how the American firm’s second model will shape up.
Tesla has now given official word that the Model S will break cover on March 26 – but this teaser shot has already got tongues wagging. The extremely short front overhang is due to the fact that unlike the Chevrolet Volt, there’s no need for a range-extending petrol engine up front. The sleek roofline and high bootlip give the car an exaggerated wedge shape – confirming it will continue the sporty theme set out by the Roadster.
The Model S is rumoured to have a 160-mile range on a single charge of its lithium-ion battery pack. But more importantly it’s likely to cost around half as much as the £100,000 Roadster – of which 200 have now produced with another 1,000 customers still awaiting delivery.
