Supercar inspires T25 cabin

Gordon Murray's new city car has McLaren F1 roots

04th September 2009

It's small but perfectly formed! Legendary Formula One designer and the brains behind the McLaren F1 supercar, Gordon Murray, has given more details about his T25 city car project.

The diagram above reveals the secrets of its ingenious space-saving layout.

The T25 is smaller than a Smart ForTwo, but it can accommodate three adults thanks to its v-shaped seating arrangement – which is similar to the F1’s.

There are six layouts, each featuring a compromise between the number of passengers and the available load space.

With just the driver on board, the latter can be stretched to 750 litres.

The diagrams reveal there’s no clutch pedal, as the T25 relies on push buttons to control the gearbox, with the option of fully automatic or manual modes.

The first full prototype is currently being built, which will help Murray sell the concept to car firms.

But it’s not only the size of cars Murray wants to cut.

He’s also devised a unique iStream manufacturing process that can reduce the floor space and investment of a typical car factory by up to 80 per cent.
