Scrap scheme extension?

Two-thirds of original funds have been used to scrap old cars.

21st September 2009

As the money allocated to the UK Scrappage Scheme begins to run out, the industry is calling for the initiative to be extended.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) met with Business Secretary Lord Mandelson to ask for a further £200million in funding. More than two-thirds of the original £300million has been claimed – and the SMMT says that will run out in early November at the current rate.

But after the scheme’s success in reversing 15 months of falling sales, makers are worried that a sudden end to it will create more uncertainty. SMMT boss Paul Everitt described the meeting as “very constructive” and hoped a decision would be made within three weeks.

“This would allow Scrappage to continue until next February, when it was predicted to end,” he added. “We still need to convince the Treasury that it has been a success for the wider economy, as well as car makers.”

Why not?

Since the govt makes more in VAT than it spends in scrappage on each car, it makes sense to extend the scheme indefinitely. It will also put a floor under the used market and will naturally unwind

Because my Pug 106 was first registered at the end of September '99,I find it's just outside the set in stone cutoff date for the scrappage scheme! How about extending the parameters to include cars that REACH 10 Years old while the scheme is available, instead of an arbitrary cutoff that prevents those with an "Almost" eligible car to take part?

How about you be kind to the environment, keep your current car running, which even if it is a dirty old V8, will actually produce less emissions over the rest of its life than the fumes created in manufacturing a brand new car? This incentive is a massive crime with so many perfectly usable cars needlessly being scrapped when their parts could be used to keep other cars on the road. The classic car communities are losing their valuable parts supple this way and the whole thing is a massive massive waste on resources just so we can help our useless government out.
