Reborn Porsche 928 is fronting up!

Front-engined 2+2 set to slot in above 911, Based on Panamera, with hybrid on the way

Porsche 928

By Jack Rix

23rd October 2009

Get ready for a blast from Porsche’s past! The German firm is developing a luxurious, front-engined grand tourer – a spiritual successor to the 928 built between 1977 and 1995. The ‘new 928’ will be a fifth model line, and is designed to sit above the sportier 911 in the range.

With the compact Boxster and Cayman, the 911, the Cayenne SUV and four-door Panamera, Porsche would appear to have most bases covered. But it’s notable for its absence in the front-engined GT segment. The newcomer will allow the brand to take on rivals such as the Ferrari 599 GTB, Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB9. And our exclusive pictures show exactly why the curvy, Panamera-based coupé is set to stun the competition.

Essentially it’s a two-door, short-wheelbase version of the Panamera, which will help to spread the £1.1billion development costs of that model. Its front-engined layout has a number of inherent benefits, too.

A rear-engined 911 has barely more than 100 litres of luggage space, but a similarly sized GT with its motor up front would offer a useful 320 litres – a vital attribute if the new 928 is to be taken seriously as a grand tourer.

While the nose is virtually identical to the Panamera, the shortened wheelbase and 2+2 layout mean the 928 features far smoother lines at the back. One of the major criticisms levelled at the four-door Panamera was its bloated rear, but this model’s muscular haunches and neater proportions should attract a new wave of style-conscious customers.

As you’d expect from Porsche, though, driver appeal remains a top priority. The engine line-up will mirror that of the Panamera, so a 4.8-litre V8, with or without a turbocharger, producing 500bhp or 400bhp, will be available. The naturally aspirated variant is set to come with four or rear-wheel drive, while the range-topping turbo model will be 4WD only.

Thirsty V8s aren’t the only power units on the agenda. The Cayenne SUV hybrid is ready to go on sale next year, with a petrol-electric version of the Panamera following closely behind. As the new 928 shares the latter’s platform, it’s sure to get the hybrid drivetrain, too.

An Audi S4-sourced 369bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6, coupled to a 38kW electric motor, will give the hybrid 928 fuel economy that breaks the 30mpg barrier. That will make it the most frugal petrol-powered Porsche ever, while still providing hair-raising performance.

The 928 will slot into Porsche’s pricing line-up somewhere between the 911 and Panamera. The four-door ranges from £70,000-£95,000, while the 911 starts a little lower, at just over £60,000, but stretches to £128,000 for the GT2.

With this is mind, expect the 928 to be pitched between £65,000 and £90,000 – enough to safely undercut its Ferrari and Aston rivals when it goes on sale in 2012.

That's a Porsche

Why don't Porsche design cars like that!

By lucasworld on 28 October, 2009, 12:21pm

Porsche Design

The Aston Martin rear quarter, which any stretch of the imagination is not bad thing. The frontend is very panamera which I am not keen on, but it's not ugly. I think you can safely say it will handle well and from reading the line up will be fast enough for most.

New Porsche 928 GT ?

What a welcome back from Porsche, congratulations on this fantastic design as shown here in Autocar, personally Its is just about perfect back ,Looking back when the first 928 was banded about as the replacement for the 911 in the late seventies , we all know it never made it for all sorts of good reasons, though none was for a bad car as it was and still is in essence a great car in its own right,so hearing Porsche are announcing the new Modern day 928 and with a far more
sophisticated market 30 years on , this simply fabulous 2009 GT design provides it with all the right clothing to perfectly outstyle anything out there currently in sensible terms and will be best in the supercar GT market and with build quality, driving ability, performance and reliability its a TEN,TEN and TEN, and a lasting legacy from the stable prior to Audi, thanks Porsche

It a beauty

Few of my friend had a Posche 928. I love the Panamera, That was my wife dream car. The new & revived 928 will be a good car for me. We rememebered James Bond drove 3 BMWs & couple Audis. He return in 2011, But this won't be released. But this car will suit him. If Q who will also return can put gadgets on that car so he won't crash or wreak it. Change him out of his Aston Martin for a while.

NICE but BORING!

Looks too close to an Aston, Jaguar. Very nice but boring. Porsche distinguishes itself from other manufacturers because it has unique shapes that symbolize the brand i.e 911 and who could forget the classic 928. Sure the market is competitive, but that's why they pay designer's top money. C'mon guys and girls use your brains and creative geniues and come up with something that shocks but is beautiful, memorable and practical. Nuff said!

OMG

it about time the clowns @ porsche designed a car more attractive than the 911. i think they're onto a winner if this car makes production. another porsche fan boys wet dream....

By marsxman on 29 October, 2009, 10:14am

hhhhmmmm..not sure

Yes its a good looking car but its alittle disappointing to see that they've clearly played safe by copying the Aston and Jaguar design instead of creating something bold and fresh, which is something we're usually used to with 'Supercar' makers is it not ?.

nice but...

I guess at Porsche they lack of designers. The rear is much alike Aston or Jaguar and the specific photo reminds me of a Ferrari. The Old 928 was a striking car, this is a mix of everything!

Not a Porsche

The front end should have the classic round lights that the original 928 had, the rear resembles a cross between a Jaguar XK and a Peugeot 407 coupe and the sides are almost identical to the Hyundai coupe.
I'd have an Aston Martin DBS over this anyday, even if the Porsche is faster around the 'Ring, because handling and speed are not the most important factors in this class. Nothing can beat the Aston for image in my humble opinion.

Reliabilty Porsche, Aston Ferrari

Critic's are of course out there, But ask All those folk who own Astons or a Ferrari, myself I love them both and like their designs and styles but anyone with any idea ,hate the breakadowns and unreliability of Astons and high cost of ownership, this style is the definative GT shape and not exclusive to them or Jaguar alone and while not whole heartily original, treat it as a Jap interloper finishing the job, others charge ridiculous prices for their cars that remain unfinished project..I can forgive Aston but not Ferrari..

Attack of the clones

There is no homage to the original 928 at all.
Very "Jagu-rati"

By 1964dragon on 29 October, 2009, 5:29pm

Hey, it looks a little like an Aston Martin, and that's a *bad* thing?? OK, not terribly original but it is slick and if you've had a close-up look at the Panamera, you'll know it's going to be 100% Porsche in execution. I'll put my order in as soon as the Lottery comes through.

By mcrosson on 29 October, 2009, 6:28pm

Porsche took an Aston and chopped it at the windscreen and added a Porsche front end. Still looks good. Porsche may have a tough time in beating the AM pricing. Still like Astons as Grand Touring wannabes.

As an owner of a 87 928 S4, people that have never driven a 928 have no idea what a great car the 928 really is. Its still one of the fastest cars around, timeless styling and will look great in another 30 years. Porsche should never have stopped building the 928. I think that because this car is not a clean sheet design, it should be called a 929 as suggested by another member of Rennlist. I'am looking forward to buying a new one when it becomes available.

A GT-R RIVAL?

Front engine, big boot, 4wd. Sounds remarkably like a GT-R. Look forward to the comparison test in due course.

By john_m_ball on 29 October, 2009, 9:00pm

Looks fine to me

I'm another owner of a 928S4. A car so awesome that I've kept it for 12 years. I took advantage of the dramatic depreciation that V8 cars experience and I shall be looking to do the same thing with this new 928 when it comes time for my mid-life crisis.
I checked out the black Panamera in the Porsche Chiswick showroom the other day and found it to be too big and not exactly a looker. This new shorter wheelbase 2 door 928 looks fine though.
My cousin has a Nissan GT-R and john m ball is right that the GT-R is indeed stiff competition.

Fabulous Porsche

Absolutely stunning car that has the gorgeous front of the Panamera and the overall styling flair thats more common with the Ferrari California and the Aston Marton Vantage. Porsche, please do not change a thing, the styling is spot on! You have a sure winner.

Panamera

Anybody know if Porsche are planning to drop a V6 petrol/diesal into the panamera?? bobsnicholson

I want one!

I want one now! It's lovely and you know it'll be wonderfully built. Better that than some Audi R8 rubbish.

beware!

I hope Porsche will come up with something ugly-as-usual, cause beautiful car like this might bring cataclysms to our world..

By lameriz on 17 November, 2009, 7:59am

I Like!!!

I agree with some of the comments above with regards to the styling cues taken from Aston Martin and Jaguar, however, those cars look fantastic. Porsche are on to a winner here, I wil be seriously looking at buying one of these if they do launch it. I really do think they are onto a winner here, great looks, reliability and hopefully fantastic ride and handling, what more do you need?

Aston Martin / Jaguar backend, (then again the Jaguar XF is a Mondeo all done up)
Wit the quality controls of Toyota Porsche turned to Toyota the early 90s to help with their quality issues.)

By hugo_b on 3 December, 2009, 4:11pm

New car idea...

New Porsche is okay. Need to merge something like the old shape Tigra, with Porche, and the new Ferrari 'sexy' looking lights. That would be the perfect looking car me thinks. Not 4 me tho' have 2 young kids so have Fabia vRS.

By AmazinAndrea on 18 December, 2009, 10:15am

steve

When i first seen this in AE my eyes almost popped out my head. Could it be a desirable porsche design? Or a DB9 in a german suit? Either way, the design is gorgeous and for once a porsche flows to the rear in a way that a coupe should. I just hope they use the panamera interior and with the now standard porsche design, they will be on to an absolute winner. This might just be the first porsche i would consider owning. Do the right thing stuttgart.

By stevetyler899010 on 12 January, 2010, 3:42am

i don't believe about it

I was one of the first owner for 928 and 928S
Excepted the logo they were not Porsche cars...
Too heavy, closer to a mercedes style...
Due to the WV Group, it will be the Audi style

Nice 'Photo Shop' job Auto Express. Your Digital Master should get a legitimate job.

By 3Deuce27 on 9 March, 2010, 8:51am

Drive of your life? . . . Yeah right!

Read the twin test of the Panamera and the AM Rapide and Autocar said the Porker was soulless and with numb steering so I can't see any 911 or Boxster owners trading up if this 928 is anything like the same (efficient) experience.

By LANMAN on 1 July, 2010, 12:25am

Hardly the first Porsche to break 30mpg...

Most Porsche 356s would do better than 30mpg.

A Porsche 914 1.7 would do 30mpg, as would a 912.

And the Porsche 924S I used to own had an official fuel consumption figure of 40mpg at 56mph and would easily manage mid-30s in normal driving.

By RundSchneemann on 31 August, 2010, 1:12pm

Looks like a Jag from the back

Nothing Porsche about it ..and Porsche is the only German car I like .. it's trying to be a JAG not a Porsche!

By liverpool on 14 June, 2011, 9:56pm

Hugo B

Aston Martin / Jaguar backend, (then again the Jaguar XF is a Mondeo all done up) WTF...

Err mate do your homework; the XF and current Mondeo have absolutely no commonality! You maybe refering to the X type which did (in non four wheel drive guise) share a large amount of previous gen Mondeo chassis! The XF is a completely different car from the ground up.

As for Porsche's lazy design team; the first decent looking Porsche in 30 plus years and its a blatant knock off of Jaguar's and Aston Martin's fluid and beautiful designs. That said it just shows how far those two firms have moved up for Porsche to be copying them!
