Toyota has released an official statement giving advice to owners who may experience a sticking throttle, following the global recall of several million of its vehicles.

The problem affects Aygo, iQ, Yaris, Auris, Avensis, Corolla, RAV4 and Verso models built between February 2005 and this month.

“People should be aware that this is not a problem that develops suddenly,” said Miguel Fonseca, managing director of Toyota GB.

“There are warning signs that will indicate that your vehicle might have a problem, such as the accelerator pedal becoming harder to depress or slow to return to its normal position.

"In some cases, drivers may notice a rough or chattering feeling when depressing or releasing the accelerator pedal. In the rare event that Toyota drivers notice that the accelerator pedal is hard to depress, slow to return or is unsmooth during operation, they should contact their nearest Toyota dealership.

Of the several million vehicles sold in Europe in the past five years there have been only a small number of reported cases of drivers experiencing a problem with a sticking accelerator pedal. There have been no reports of any accidents or injuries occurring as a result of this problem in Europe, or the UK.

Any customers who have concerns should contact Toyota GB Customer Relations on 0800 1388 744. The firm is also providing additional website services. Owners of recalled vehicles will be contacted by Toyota.

The fix involves the installation of a steel reinforcement bar into the throttle linkage, which helps to reduce the tension that can develop in the system over time.

Horror stories on TV news from USA

I saw on the TV news a motorist with the accelerator pedal jammed fully down, out of control, on the freeway at 120 MPH.
He was making a frantic call on his cell phone for help.
Moments later, in a complete panic, he crashed the car.

Could he not just have switched the ignition switch off - or moved the gear shifter into neutral ?

hindsight is really a wonderful thing its easy to comment when your not in that situation, and with your whole family in the car with both you and them panicking, could you count on your self to make the right decision.

That is precisely why drivers need to be prepared. There needs to be a mass education programme to tell people what to do. It is simple and quick to put the gearbox into neutral. Practise it a few times - on a suitably clear road - so you're ready if the throttle sticks open. Switching off the ignition is another option but you'd then lose power assistance on steering and brakes.
