IT may be called the Juke, but it's certainly not boxy! These are the first official images of Nissan's new curvy cross-over which aims to repeat the success of the Qashqai, this time offering buyers a funky alternative to a regular supermini.
Boasting a very distinctive body, a raised ride height, the option of four-wheel drive with torque vectoring and a new 187bhp 1.6-litre turbo engine, the Juke will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month before going on sale here in October. It should cost from around £13,000, battling it out with rivals as diverse as Vauxhall's Meriva and MINI's Countryman.
Penned at Nissan's Paddington design centre in London, it will be built at the firm's factory in Sunderland and is described as "a
combination of SUV toughness and sporting style".
As you can see, the showroom-ready version features many touches from the Qazana concept that previewed it, including circular spotlights at the front, a wide-mouthed grille, pronounced wheelarches, hidden rear door handles and chunky, four-square proportions.
Inside, the
cabin is just as striking with a
centre console inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank, finished in high gloss paint. Large twin chrome-ringed dials mark out the instrument binnacle, while the facia also features colour displays for the ventilation system. With seating for five and a rear bench that splits and folds flat, plus a hatchback boot and plenty of cubby holes, it should offer decent practicality too.
Beneath the skin, the Juke features a development of the same platform that underpins the Micra and the Clio of Nissan's Alliance partner, Renault. Front-wheel drive versions get MacPherson struts with a torsion beam at the rear while four-wheel drive models
have a multi-link rear suspension modelled on the system found on
Qashqai.
The latter gets ALL-MODE 4x4-i – a new development of Nissan’s electronic all-wheel drive system, which now features torque
vectoring designed to enhance agility and reduce understeer when
cornering. However, don't expect much off-road ability. "Juke was born in an urban environment
and that is where it will spend most of its life,” said
Simon Thomas, Nissan’s European senior vice president for sales and marketing.
Three engines will be
available: a 1.5-litre diesel and two 1.6-litre petrol units. Topping the petrol line-up is a new direct injection turbocharged unit that produces 187bhp and 240 Nm of torque. It is the only engine to be available with four-wheel drive and gets a new six-speed CVT automatic.
Further down the range the 115bhp 1.6-litre non-turbo petrol gets a five-speed manual as standard or a CVT automatic, while the 109bhp 1.5-litre dCi diesel has a six-speed manual. Visia, Acenta and Tekna trim lines will be available, so expect most models to get alloy wheels and climate control. In addition, a full range of
accessories developed for owners who want to personalise their
Juke further will also be available.

Wow...
Expect to see Mel "Mad-Lad" Gibson smashing through barriers with his trusty Ozzie sheepdog in the passenger seat and a shawn-off shotgun pointing outta the window at anarchist scumbags, when this one comes down the road for the first time!!!
It will look evil in matt-black....Well done Nissan! Now wheres the V8 supercharged-nitro conversion for that Apocalypse?
Spot on little car, gonna trade the mini cooper convertible in for one straight away, they will shift tens of thousands of this little beauty.
OK, it's different, but I fear Nissan have tried a little too hard with the exterior design and then overcompensated with the interior. A small economical car, with the option of 4WD to aid traction on icy roads is a winning idea, so long as the price is right.
The styling of the Juke will polarise opinion unlike most Nissans and will probably lead to it becoming a Marmite car - loved or hated. Sadly, I fall into the latter category.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I'm shocked to see even one positive comment regarding the styling of this car - it looks worse than the less-than-favourable concept pictures.
I watched a rerun of Top Gear the other night when they were mucking about in a Rover SD1, Triumph Dolomite and an Austin Princess - with the exception of the Dolomite, I never regarded British Leyland cars as anything special to look at, but compared to the designs of today, even the Princess looks attractive!
Does the name have a hidden meaning? Maybe Nissan's arrogance in marketting such a mess and expecting people to buy it inspired the name - Juke actually signifying the Joke is on U if you buy one.
I'm so excited about this one, only problem is our lease on our current Nissan Note is up in September, that's a shame 'cos it's one month before the Juke comes out :(.
Really good to see that it's a small 4x4 with automatic gearbox, being autistic I can't drive manual cars so have to have one with automatic.
Would really love a 4x4 as I do a lot of events with Scouts (although the Note does handle really well off road even though it's not 4x4!). But most 4x4's are too big, or not automatic (the only small 4x4 I can think of is the Fiat Panda 4x4).
Also glad to see it's built in Britain, some of the best vehicles were British like LDV, Land Rover, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Mini and now many of the new Nissan's also join the club, the only other country I know of that exceeds our standards in car manufacturing is Sweden.
Hopefully we can persuade the lease company to let us hang on to the Note until they get the Juke in.
There is only one thing I don't like about the Juke - the headlights are way too small and totally spoil the "friendly" look of the car.
this really is not a looker, it cannot decide weather to look like a fish our a car or something totally third.
notmally they produce allright looking cars but this is just not buyabol
Why can't I get Clarence the cross eyed lion out my head when I look at this? Considering Nissan have already had the hilariously named Cedric in their name stable I don't think Clarence would have been out of place for this wee cracker!
Please do not let this virus spread - mini SUV coupes are NOT cool or interesting! Infact mini SUVs are NOT cool either. Infact SUV's are just WRONG! Don't buy this ugly duck - unless you want to look a total twerp....!
Now the Japanese have gone to far!
Wow I haven't seen something so ugly since the Sunny, hold on! Wait! This was also a Nissan!
It was ok till they put on the indicators on the bonnet!
What a stupid design.
Nissan sell it there. It is hideous.
Well at least it is a bit different from all the other 'small' cars being offered right now. However, like 'Gavsmit' I still prefer the styling of cars from the 70s and 80s. This Juke is a bit of a blob and whoever thought of mounting the indicators and side lights on top of the front wings must have been on something dodgy.
On the other hand, given the money, I would prefer this to the new Audi A1 - but until the stylists get real, I think I'll stick with my Mk 1 Almera!
Yes, well done Nissan! An interesting look, different than just about anything else on the market. It''s not to everyone's taste, but who cares about that! It's daring in appearance and the engine/transmission choices give appeal to people who want economy or those who want a bit of excitement. I can't wait to see one up close. I hope the lads in Sunderland like their overtime, 'cos their going to be busy knocking these out!
The styling is strikingly and beautifully DIFFERENT to the other run of the mill bangers from VW, Audi and Co on to-days markets!
It will certainly be a big hit with the main customer target groups and brings a real whiff of excitement and dash to the otherwise uninteresting Mini SUV group.
Coming out of Nissans modern plant in Sunderland it will certainly be very well built with top panel and interior quality etc just like our superb well equipped Qashgai dCI that we really love here in Germany and Switzerland!
Its certainly streets ahead of poor BMWs coming expensive Mini Countryman Kit Kar Plastic banger from Magna in all aspects AND it is designed and built in Britain.
It will certainly be price wise extremely good value for money - great news for buyers! When can we order?
Why are critics so hung up on looks ?
What it can do and how well it does it is important if you drive. 4x4 with good cornering/stopping, 190bhp on 6speed/CVTauto does it for me.
I like it. It has a lot of cool features for it's size and relative to its competitive class. And for the estimated price it has good value. It clearly tries to do a lot in a little frame. It's clearly not meant to knock the Golf off its pedestal, Golfs are for people that want to be like everyone else. The Juke is for people that want to stand out from the crowd and drive something with unique styling.
This will be another fashionable accessorie for rich couples here in Portugal, just like the qashqai is!don´t even need to wait for the price tag,I just know it´ll be hefty!
I´d rather have me a Kia Soul, much more elegant and consensual, bulky as well for those that are happy to own a city car that looks like it´s a 4x4!
Never said that suv´s aren´t ridiculous either...
looks like it can go cross country but it´s nothing more than a grown up city car with a heavier ecological footprint!why do they keep doing this?don´t tell me that a qashqai sips less fuel than a Mégane with the same dci...and what for?to look like an suv!!!
It´s RIDICULOUS!
Remember, this is just my opinion,do not intend to offend anyone.
This Nissan Joke (ups, sorry!) has a nice bold interior though...
And you thought Quashquash was ugly?! Think again.
I think a lot of commenters are narrow minded. Personally I need a car that can get across a muddy building site, carry heavy and bulky musical equipment and every now and then get a few rods inside and make it down to the beach, yet it also needs to be compact, smart and presentable. I need something which does a few different things well so these crossover vehicles are quite tempting. I like the unusual styling but until the production model is sat in the show room who really knows? I guess if your life consists of home-office-home-tesco-home and reapeat until death you may bawk at these vehicles, but if you've got more going on then these weird vehicles could solve a lot of problems. I'm not sure nissan have got it right yet but I hope that someone cracks it soon and comes up with a compact car that can transport a fair amount of gear whilst being presentable enough for a professional.
Has anyone noticed that yet? Maybe that's how they'll market it - a Micra goes into a gym and comes out as a Juke, for all those people out there that demand a tougher Micra.
lloks --> Micra on steroids defo haha but yes cool to have somthing different. 1.6 turbo 4WD kicks ass probably knowing Nissan ability to build powerful but not so thirsty engine
I love it - got my order in already at my local dealer.
Wow, this is one bold looking small car- a refreshing alternative to the sedate yaris or jazz. Nissan deserve credit for coming up with such an interesting looking vehicle, and I bet it will attract a wide range of customers old and young, male and female. I have to say I like it - well done nissan!
A wonderful looking car I love the design and styling both inside and out this car should sell well in the UK. well done Nissan
I like this, good look different.
I may look at this as an option when buying new car in Nov was looking at quashq!
Funcky
Certainly clever work by Nissan, seeing that actually there are people who would have no problem driving this. No offence meant, but surely Nissan used to be about being sensible , sporty and timelessly elegant - the most enduring aspects distinguishing all popular models pre-dating the recent crop of crazy designs : pixo, cube, qashqai, and the fact you almost only have SUV or mini cars in the line up, can one say anything like that about these. The likes of VW, AUDI or BMW keep to their stable desing lanugages (boring you might say) for a reason. Not to lose the vast majority of potential customers and loyal buyers in the attempt to attract niche markets. Hope thing s go well for Nissan with this, but as they say, I for one I am out (this after having driven only Nissans since) !
Well done Nissan. A fantasic (in the true meaning of the word) looking car. Many will love it and it WILL SELL like hot cakes and will be UK built to boot..
VW, Audi or BMW? Yep boring cars in the main, fine if you like that but why with all the choice out there anyone would but a 3 box saloon is beyond me!
we are building it here in sunderland UK it is one amazing car and dose not deserve any bad criticism its different and yes will use less petrol than a Megan who ever said it wouldn't also it will have a 4x4 engine in, the all wheel drive models for all you 4x4 enthusiasts the all wheel drive engine will be accompanied by 370 z road handling which is out of this world in terms of mini suvs , just like the quashquai its very nice and well deserves a 3rd and 4th look when people drive by !
this car is foretasted to sell more than any other Nissan car .
just like the quashquai ford vw toyota and all the others started to copy because they found out we were on to something i.e the for kuga what a rip off of the quashquai that was !come on get your cheque books out and part with your cash it will be the best car you have ever owned!for def!!!!!!
andy from sunderland plant uk
Looks a fine motor. Not too sure of the 'headlights' though. Seem to sit on top of the wings and maybe a distraction when driving in the dark.
I love the way Nissan are going with the Micra range; they've really nailed the idea that buyers want something different rather than putting out 3dr, 5dr and estate versions of the same design with little changes. The only model I don't like is the new Micra which loses its wonderful shoulders and bubble end at the rear to make way for a more generic design.
Here however Nissan have done a cut/shut job and are following the wrong pattern that Ford tried to do with PAG; make designs that are carried from the home company. The rear of the Juke looks like a Megane mk1 with a rear light cluster redesign; the front of the car looks very French despite the wide grille and how will those Citroen (granted, they don't own Nissan as Renault do but they are French) copied Pluriel headlights cope with frontal crash costs?
I like the idea of the Juke but I don't understand the marketing or design for it- if it is supposed to be a mini SUV style like the Qashqai's options, then why the sloping coupe like roof for rear passengers and decreased luggage space?
Come on guys anyone who thinks this is nice ,should get there eyes checked .ugly duckling maby ,nice no way.
come on nissan ,we need more new ideas ,not boring designs.
How ugly can a new car design be? This joins the odious Rodius and the Pontiac Aztec. Crazy!
It looks like they couldn't make up their minds whether to give it highly stylised headlamps or really big fog lights. So they gave it both?. The look of the car you own isn't the most important thing, especially from behing the wheel, but I would not be happy with that on my drive. Yuk!.
ENOUGH SAID!
