Peugeot's high 5

Peugeot's high 5 set for Geneva debut

French firm release first official picture and details on its Geneva bound 5 concept.

Peugeot 5

15th February 2010

Say hello to Peugeot's new 5! The Geneva Motor Show star is aiming high - with a dramatic new take on the luxury car market.

Essentially a replacement for the unloved 607 saloon, the 5 aims to put right previous wrongs in this sector with a bold new look and a daring design.

The newcomer also promises the very latest environmental technology, with a 200bhp diesel-electric hybrid engine that offers  four-wheel drive and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km or zero in battery only mode.

Like the recent SR 1 concept car from new Peugeot design boos Gilles Vidal, the contours of the  5's bodywork flow smoothly  and without interruption,  from the end of the bonnet to the top of the boot lid.

At the front, new LED equipped lights are highlighted by the use of illuminated surrounds that blend perfectly with the overall exterior body styling.

The headlamps frame a unique front grille design, also influenced by the SR1.

The streamlined sides of the car are enhanced further by the bevelled, brushed-aluminium window surrounds and door handles, combined with sculpted 19’’ wheel trims.

Under the bonnet, the 2.0 litre HDi FAP163 bhp diesel engine is mounted at the front of the vehicle, and combined with a 37 bhp electric motor at the rear.

This arrangement provides an overall maximum power of 200 bhp, an electric only mode for low speed operation, four-wheel drive when required, and low fuel consumption and emissions of 74.3 mpg and 99 g/km of CO2 or zero in electric mode.

Details of the car's interior are stil to be revealed, however, Auto Express understands the cabin focuses on delivering an upmarket blend of space and luxury.

Full details are expected on March 2nd 2010.

5?

why it has to be called Peugeot? looks much better than that.

Respect to emissions but why 4WD? everything under 230bhp doesn't require 4WD with all ESPs etc.. could save in weight and gain few mpg more?

intellegent

An electric rear axle that gives both hybrid functionality (< 99g/km CO2!) AND all wheel drive functionality. Really really smart and exciting.

I don't like the look but I'll take it anyway. Sign me up!

5 I love it, I want it. My wife has had 6 new Puegeots and they have been uttery reliable, economic and stylish. I want this one.
Please don't add big engine gas guzzlers, there's no need.

NOt AN AUDI!

wow ! this is a real kick in the right direction. Peugeot need this inspiration for their model line up and if its as good as they say then put me down for one too(estate car please!) . And as there isnt a model the fits in this bracket then now they will have one to cover the 407 and 607. Their designs have really come a long way since the cars of the early noughties! Some were disasters (307/206/806) but now we get fantastic choices such as 3008/5008 and soon to come RC z sports. Cant wait !

That looks a lot better than peugeot dog ugly range, although the face looks a bit odd, theres no family face, it looks like a car that you'd see in an insurance advert.

For £30k + I'll take the Jaguar XF or a Lexus, not French tat

Er yeah but it's a Peugeot, and only a concept, signing up with out a test drive and seeing the finished product you will need your heads tested. Large Peugeots plummet like a lead weight, it will despite their protestations be poorly finished and made using the same parts bin as all Peugeots so to call it prestige is quite frankly a joke, the C6 has solds really well (I've seen one, probably driven by the director a a Citroen dealership) as this will clearly demand a similar price, made on the same platform and sell as well as a C6 don't get your cheque book out just yet!

Right Car but Wrong Marketing Approach!

This looks a really good car for the international Premium Segment BUT its got the wrong Tag / Name!

Would you buy a Burbery or DAKS Coat for a premium price to look good in Belgravia or St Tropez or Munich with a Woolworths label?

No - most of us would not!

This car should have superior badging and it should be called a Delahaye or Delage and with special Bodywork by Henri Chaperon or so!

It would make this car something really special then for St Germain and Biaritz etc!

!!**
Hey dear Gilles Vidal at PSA - please take a hard look with your colleagues at your Group marketing policy again!

Premium products mean higher profits!

OK who's a snob?

So apparently this car won't sell because Peugeot isn't a premium enough. Well not everyone will look at this car and think "damm if only it were an Audi". However I think some might consider this over a Volkwagen and if Peugeot put a punchy engine in this then it will certainly be a nice alternative to the Passat CC.
Does it look more attractive than a Mondeo or even the new S60?
The above comments seem to suggest it is, which is why Peugeot are breaking the mold with the 5. To offer something that customers will start to question why they should spend more money on an established premium brand when they can get something like this for much less.

Looks promising

...but as my son said, is that the new Aston Martin C90 or the Volvo Vanquish? :) So I guess it looks good.

By Buckers1010 on 16 February, 2010, 4:40pm

vandenplas4litre - Prestige is not just in the name, it's in the product .You would'nt re badge a Kia or Citroen with a cool upmarket name and charge a premium price for it (Well Citroen did and it failed as the product like it's Peugeot brother is stinking French tat) You can't just take a C5 chassis, and stuff a car from the parts bin and call it prestige, where is the heritage, the class, the pedigree? It is a big Peugeot, it will depreciate south like all French junk. Why not buy the class leader Mondeo, it's the best but is not pretending to be something it's not!

By Focus_your_mind on 16 February, 2010, 4:46pm

Not prestige, but it is the best

W00DZ - To offer something that customers will start to question why they should spend more money on an established premium brand when they can get something like this for much less - They can and already do; The Mondeo!

By Focus_your_mind on 16 February, 2010, 4:57pm

Erm, No

Welcome to The Insignia Clone Show.

From the profile at least, it has nothing to offer that virtually every other manufacturer to date hasn't offered already. The technology that AE writes about sounds good enough but the car's looks? No, sorry, does zip, zilch, nada for me. Maybe the finished cast iron version will look better but if this concept is a pre-production glimpse of the upcoming car then Peugeot won't be getting any of my hard earned cash.

By nick7 on 16 February, 2010, 4:58pm

Why do peugeot persist with these odd bonnets? It makes the car look strange

By liveforever on 16 February, 2010, 9:24pm

Unoriginal, looks like some KIA concepts....

By Sladjan75 on 18 February, 2010, 3:19pm

The car Peugeot should have made 10 years ago...they have lost their way so badly.

By mondeo_man on 19 February, 2010, 2:36pm

francophobia

Here we go again....funny how even a picture of a concept quickly becomes an unreliable car, too good to be a Peugeot,etc...for all the mondeos and vauxhall overs out there, french tat cant be that bad, if bmw uses their engines, rolls royce their hydraulic suspension systems, toyota and peugeot share technical and engineering know how on some models, Renault runs Nissan a lot better than the Japanese did, etc.... show me a reliable car! everyone will say their's is the best, the fact is Golfs, Passat, Land rovers, jags, Seat, And yes, FORDS, all have reliability problems, all have good and bad points. I have had peugeots, citroens, beemers (by far the most expensive to maintain and service, and yes to repair when the electrics went) and even a Merc. I must have been the unluckiest car buyer on the planet then, judging by all the trips i made to the garage with all my cars...
Maybe my next car should be a rolls royce, with such a name, what could go wrong, hey?

By dids66 on 21 February, 2010, 11:56pm

Beautiful Design.

This is beautiful! This is the car that peugeot should have built released in stead of the behemoth 607. The could take a large slice of the Mondeo market with this because it is certainly better looking than the mondeo. Top marks Peugeot!
