From the Champs Elysee to China, tomorrow’s Citroen-owning exec will cut a global dash! That’s the emphatic message sent out by the beguiling new Metropolis luxury concept set to take a bow at the Shanghai World Expo from 1 May.
With the C6 limo now in its fifth year, this svelte four-door hybrid gives a tantalising glimpse of how a future replacement would prioritise style and grace in a bid to take on luxurious rivals such as Jaguar’s XJ.

Designed from start to finish in Citroen’s Shanghai studio, the 5.3-metre long car reinforces just how important China is to the firm. Sales were up 57 per cent in 2009, and the market is now its second biggest after France.
The Metropolis takes a more sober approach than many of Citroen’s recent concepts, but keeps the same show car design language of the DS3 hatch. The familiar blade detail ahead of the front wheelarches runs elegantly into a thin metal strip separating the headlights.
Down the flanks, a prominent crease creates a shoulder effect that tapers inwards and down to the boot, with its active spoiler. However, the heavy surfaces are broken up to dramatic effect around the nose thanks to details such as the plunging grille, the badge cutting into the bonnet and the ‘floating’ undertray that brings to mind the aggressive 2008 ‘GT by Citroen’ concept.
No pictures of the cabin have been released yet, but Citroen claims that the styling will be ‘partly inspired by Chinese musical instruments’. The Metropolis’ hybrid drivetrain incorporates 2.0-litre V6 petrol power mated to an electric motor to deliver 460bhp, while emitting 70g/km of CO2.

What an absolutely beautiful car!!! Can't wait to see it in the showrooms. Citreon are making some stunning cars at the minute. I just wish they would bring back an updated DS23. It would wipe the floor with the competition. I would have this over the Jag any day. And I speak as someone who likes Jags! Top marks Citreon!
What an absolutely hideous car!
From its ghastly gaping grille to its silly 'blade detail'. I hate it.
DS, GS, CX - all were designed with aerodynamic, flowing and aesthetically pleasing shapes. Please, please Citroen regain your ability to design pure beautiful shapes and stop this gimmicky nonsense you seem to be playing with just now!
I agree that this shape is stunning, but I think if it looks like that post production, well, I will eat my hat!
The concept needs about a foot taking out of the bonnet to tighten up the proportions, but otherwise it's very nice. Modern and stylish - a bit of a winner.
Wow - not just at the excellent body design but the combined 460 bhp from a Citroen! Hope they have the experience and technology to keep maintain long term reliability with all that torque and power.
Just a great design from Citroen. Sophisticated panel development and concise integrated detailing. Kudos to the design team and management for green lighting this beautiful Automobile.
"2.0-litre V6 petrol power mated to an electric motor to deliver 460bhp, while emitting 70g/km of CO2" awesome!
what comes to style imho its supernice but we will see sooo many different styles (and have seen already since few years) so I m very glad we will erase ugly memories form 80s and 90s. Its important to drive something beautiful not only reliable!

I'm a great defender of Citroën from unfair criticism but I agree; I can't say this is a truly beautiful car -I'd like to see one in the metal first before pronouncing judgement. There is one thing however, included in the Citroën press release but not mentioned above (although it can be inferred from the piece): it was designed for the Chinese market. Chinese aesthetics are somewhat different to European ones and this particular form does seem to follow a less graceful and more imposing line than we might otherwise expect from Citroën. I'm not keen on the sharp edges and angles. Personally, I prefer the gentler, more sensual lines of the C6 and rather hope this doesn't point towards its replacement.
Either way, it will certainly have presence; I hope a big presence, but only in China and the Far East.
Correction - it does say it was designed entirely in Shanghai. (That's what comes of reading and posting before the next lot of students arrive for their class) Bad boy!
Large Citroens have always been an absolute joy to drive. I fondly remember the CX estate I owned back in the 80's, it was like sitting in my favourite armchair as I wafted along the road totally cocooned from wind noise and potholes. Just one problem - depreciation - wait to buy this one until it's 2-3 years old and you will pick it up for not much more than a song. Buy it new and watch your money run away like sand through your fingers.
but...
..cos that's where you'll see these most often.
Who cares if it depreciates fast. Life is for living not hordeing your money. If you want a car that will give you a good return for your money, it doesn't exist. If you want an object of beauty then sod the expensive! Buy it, drive it, enjoy it, "life's too short"...etc etc etc.
It's a winner!!! Bring it to USA, and it could change perception on french cars forever....

Obviously a wealthy man ???? or a complete d***head.
Of course all cars depreciate but large Citroens are amongst the worst, anyone with any sense takes that into consideration when deciding which car to buy. That is why large citroens never sell in large quantities.
Yes I like the look of the car but won't be buying one, I'll buy something that will be just as good to own , better built and that will have a better residual.
Again, "who cares". If you can't afford to buy one or are worried about residuals then buy something else! Let us who can afford it enjoy it.
