New Zafira gets nearer

Paris debut likely for all-new third generation of Vauxhall’s junior people mover.

Vauxhall Zafira

01st June 2010

The next Zafira is set to get a serious dose of style to match its practicality. As you can see from our exclusive spy shots, the Astra-based MPV remains faithful to the dramatic sketch of the car that was leaked last year.

You can just make out the Ampera Concept style air intakes in the front bumper, which blend with the intricate LED headlights. The light units feature multiple bulbs, just like the larger Insignia, and help give the newcomer a much more interesting nose.

A prominent feature line runs back from the light units, along the bottom of the side glass and up to a BMW-inspired Hofmeister kink at the rear. The sheet metal at the side also features the tick-shaped crease which is the same as the five-door Astra.

Unlike the smaller Meriva, the new Zafira won’t feature rear-hinged suicide doors. Instead, it’ll use large conventional doors which are almost rectangular in shape to make access easy.

The newcomer also features a gently sloping panoramic roof which gives the allusion of sportiness but doesn’t compromise rear headroom.

The interior will feature similar design themes to the Insignia, Astra and Meriva, which the next generation of Flex seating is likely to be best in class for accommodating seven occupants.

Under the bonnet, the newcomer is likely to feature the same engine range as the Astra, so the 1.4-litre turbo and 1.6-litre naturally aspirated and turbo petrols will be joined by a 2.0-litre diesel and 1.7-litre ecoFLEX oil burner.  The Zafira is also being developed to accommodate the Ampera’s range extending petrol-electric powertrain.

Here's hoping!

Hope it looks like the 4th picture above. The one that looks like a Photoshop representation. If it does it should be quite special. Get a funny feeling it won't though.

Small?

Please tell me this is some kind of mistake and it's actually a Toyota Verso in the pictures?

The rear end looks tiny compared to the current Zafira. Are Vauxhall planning to make a "Grand" version that's as big as the current car?

From the pictures it looks like the boots pace below the window line is similar to the current car, but to the roof is much smaller.

If this is so, then it seems I'm going to be looking at a Ford Galaxy for my next family car, as I NEED that space!

Why are big estate/MPV cars getting smaller, sloped roofs? People like me buy these cars because we need loads of space, including that up to the roof...

Zafira to go...

Lets hope it's built better than the current car:

No more clunking from the front suspension...
No more self-destructing EGR valves...
No more 'Jet Fighter' road roar from the tyres...
No more engine over-run when taking your foot off the throttle... No more crunching into reverse, and sometimes 1st gear...
No more clutches with variable bite points
No more juddering when pulling away from cold starts

I've owned a 2007 Zafira from new and despite it being my first new car, I can safely say it's the worst vehicle I've ever driven. Coupled with patchy customer service from my local Vauxhall dealer and poor design of the rear seats (why don't they split fold into the floor?) which compromises load space, I've made up my mind not to buy another Vauxhall...

Lucky?

Our 2006 Zafira has been great. Admittedly, it's the 2.2 auto which doesn't have most of your issues by default, but we've found it to be an excellent car in every way.

I've not had a problem with the rear seats either. I actually like the way the fold up to form a bulkhead that slides towards the front seats. However, I can see how it might not be much good for everyone. For us, the fact that I can slide the middle seats forward a few inches makes the boot just massive, and yet I still have 3 back seats fully usable, perfect for filling up on camping stuff.

Vauxhall dealers are pants though, I'll give you that!

Perceptions!!!!

Zafira A and B owner 60,000 miles each. None of the above problems, you get what you pay for. Well enough made and better to live with than French opposition.

Jerky start in the B model's Easytronic, sport mode cut the body roll to a minimum try cornering in the opposition!!! 7 adults in a Focus/Astra length car and great for taking rubbish to the tip and picking up large loads, good price and okay running costs. Okay not the coolest car but Design/SRI trim pretty good, VFM/bang for buck does what it says on the tin.

Reliability no problems for mine, Vauxhall Dealers do vary, so does Tesco/Asda/M and S.

May not be cool but safer and as versatile any. Would only be better if made in the UK. Have you seen Ellesmere Ports quality lately!!!!

If it's got the design features of Astra/Insignia and New Meriva it will be a winner. Ampera style power train and the worlds it oyster.

So whats that different?

I was hoping they might make the rear doors sliding or like the new Mariva. (Vauxhall/Opel have done it before)

Also making the rear seats not only split but independant slide too as it would be nice to be able to move some of the seats when you have a child seat (NON ISOFIX) held in by the seatbelt on one side.
