The warranty wars are hotting up! Vauxhall has announced that every new car sold from August 1st onwards will come with a ‘lifetime’ warranty. Naturally, there are some conditions to the deal which Vauxhall claims is an unprecedented move in the industry.
The warranty applies to the first owner of any Vauxhall registered from August 1st 2010. The deal covers the powertrain, steering system, brake system and electrical equipment throughout the life of the vehicle until it reaches 100,000 miles. Buyers must visit a Vauxhall dealer every year for a free vehicle inspection to qualify for the cover.
Speaking about the deal, Vauxhall MD Duncan Aldred said, “With the Vauxhall Lifetime Warranty, we are making a strong statement of confidence in the quality of our products and a clear intent to provide the very best customer service in the UK.”
The firm has also announced that it is currently working on further programme enabling second owners to purchase the Lifetime Warranty.

That says it all
In 2009 Vauxhall sold 237,840 cars in the UK.
At least 112,988 were to fleets (2009 sales of Corsa+Astra(inc Zafira)+Insignia), who probably won't benefit. The average mileage at disposal from a fleet was 47,005 miles and 39.45 months in 2009.
Of the rest, I'm going to have to guess. I'd say when you remove "management" cars and pre-regs (the kind that end up on Vauxhall forecourts as nearly new Network Q), you're probably left with around 20-30,000 Vauxhall's that get registered to private buyers per year.
Most of these are likely to be smaller Vauxhall's, Corsas and Merivas, which are probably only going to do 30 - 40,000 miles in 3-4 years before being sold on anyway. Maybe half say?
So, as a rough guess, I'd say less than 5% of new Vauxhalls are sold to buyers (as the first owner) who then keep the car for more than the current 3 years or 60,000 miles that you're covered for.
Thanks Vauxhall, thanks for nothing! Now if they pass this warranty onto the next owner, that will be something...
Are you seriously complaining because Vauxhall introduced a lifetime warranty that wasnt there before? It is your choice to sell the car on - if you do youve lost nothing; if you dont well fabtastic you get worry free motoring without having to reinvest in new car depreciation every 3 years!
I take it you would turn this offer down then ? finally the industry starts to improve warranty's and you complain ! I wish my Audi had a life time guarantee !! It would have saved me a lot of cash by 5 years old when i got a bill for £10k !!!.for timing chains etc..
As for you being a manic depressant...I think that should be depressive unless you depress manics.......lol
I could not agree more Oilburner. I believe that there are some out there who like to do nothing more than slag off Vauxhall. To be honest, I think if Vauxhall had said they intend to make all cars out of 24 Karat gold for no extra money. These IDIOTS would still want to have a go at them by claiming the extra weight was bad for the enviroment or something. However I too believe that it would be a great thing to be able to pass on to the second owner and would help prop up resale prices, and give the second owner worry free driving. However if many of these cars are ex fleet cars, that have been hammered up and down the country every day, you do find yourself asking the question "would I want to warantee these cars?" For me the answer has to be NOOOOO. But if the warantee was available where the car had been privately owned or say had been a motabiliy car, then it starts to become more acceptable. Any way WELL DONE VAUXHALL, and not just for the warantee.
Well, if my experience with Vauxhall and their cars is indicative of the norm, Vauxhall will probably be bankrupt within a year...
One day I too will learn to spell Waranty....... Yeahhhhhh !!!!
Moan,moan,moan.
Some people are never happier than when they are slagging of anything to do with the UK.
If this had been done by Renault or Peugeot they would have been singing their praises.
No wonder we have nothing left in this Country.
Its all been bought by overseas Companys who can spot the potential.
I have been a long admirer of the vauxhall brand, I have had a number of them over the years but could never actually get to afford a new one ;(
The warranties are a very clear statement of the companies belief and faith in their product - so why has it taken this long. Other companies such as Kia and Hyundai have been entertaining long warranties for a number of years now with 7yrs and 5yr deals accordingly.
I now drive a Kia Pro-Ceed and I must say it is an excellent car, but more over the service you get from the dealership and the attention to detail afforded to the customer is second to none (ie, they spot things and repair immediately, no negotiations as to whether it is a warranted item or not, as everything is covered!!!) - instead of leaving it alone and waiting for it to fail outside the warranty window (barring safety issues of course).
COME ON YOU BIG BOYS (namely FORD & VAUXHALL, catch up as isn't it time you had faith in your products - or don't you YET ?!?!? and if so WHY NOT?????)
Everyone is complaining that ex fleet cars won't be covered. In my experience (as a fleet user) bucket loads of cars used in big fleets, and ours has 2000+ in just my division, the cars are not moved on until they have at least 90K and more like 120K on them. No warranty then. This does not mean fleet car are all bad buys as thy are generally well maintained, and management grade cars have mostly been looked after. Private motors are quite often are skimped on as the service bills start to rise and the finance starts to pinch.
I believe this deal is more aimed at tempting private buyers away from the Koreans with teir dull but highly warranted drudge boxes.
Complaining about the warranty not being passed to the next user? Non transferable warranties are the norm in lots f markets. Want the warranty? BUY NEW or buy an insurance backed policy.
Lifetime warranty.. but cars do need servicing every year, servicing is not free is it ?
How much is a vauxhall car service .. will they raise service costs over the life time ??
