Baby Porsche is shaping up

Our images show all-new Cajun SUV, based on Audi Q5, with sharper look

Baby Porsche is shaping up

22nd October 2010

Meet the baby Porsche with added spice! Our exclusive images preview a new SUV coupé that’s set to join the firm’s ranks.

Due to be called the Cajun, it slots into the range below the Cayenne and will go head-to-head with the Range Rover Evoque and BMW X4, which we revealed in Issue 1,137.

The Cajun is the first car to be developed under Porsche’s new owner, VW. And as the Cayenne was created alongside the VW Touareg and Audi Q7, so this model will have much in common with Audi’s Q5.

It will be slightly lower and shorter than the Q5, but around 90mm wider, giving an imposing, sporty stance. And it will tip the scales at around 1,700kg.

In a bid to distance the Cajun further from other models in the family, Porsche will offer it only as a three-door initially. Engines will be sourced from Audi, with buyers getting a choice of two petrol units, two diesels and a petrol-electric hybrid.

Kicking off the range will be a pair of four-cylinder variants: a 237bhp 2.0-litre petrol turbo and a 188bhp 2.0-litre TDI. Top-spec cars will get either a 3.0-litre TFSI petrol V6, producing 328bhp, or 3.0 TDI with 237bhp and 550Nm of torque. Flagship Cajuns are expected to cover 0-62mph in less than six seconds.

A six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed PDK twin-clutch auto will be offered, while the four-wheel-drive system is to be biased towards tarmac use, so off-road features will be limited to hill descent control and all-weather tyres. The hybrid model is based on Audi’s forthcoming green Q5, which features a 210bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to a 47bhp electric motor, and gives a zero-emissions range of 1.8 miles.

Although the Cajun is heavily based on the Q5, Porsche will fit unique suspension, damper and braking set-ups. The firm will also recalibrate the stability control for a sportier drive, and offer Porsche Active Stability Management as an extra, to control the new dampers.

The Sports Chrono package will be an option, too. This brings a sports exhaust to increase engine power, as well as launch control on cars with the PDK gearbox. VW Group design chief Walter de’Silva has already expressed interest in working on Porsche’s new models, and aims to move away from the controversial design seen on the Panamera. But the Cajun will still be striking, with a low, swooping roofline and short overhangs.

Inside, the four-seater cabin promises more luxury than the Q5. The centre console will be set higher, to cocoon the driver and give the car a small and nimble feel. Plus, the Panamera-inspired dash design and switchgear, set to appear in the new Boxster and Cayman next year, will ensure the model looks like a true Porsche.

When it goes on sale in 2013, it will be priced between the Q5 and Cayenne, which start from £27,980 and £41,404 respectively. The entry-level Cajun is likely to be slightly more expensive than the base Evoque Pure, which will cost from around £30,000.

How to make common what is rare

Poor move by Porsche in terms ofkeeping the mystique going. No doubt bean counters and marketeers have all seen incremental gains in market share for the brand but thye appear to be unable to understand that brand appeal cannot be diluted for ever. The Cayenne was stupid and this is stupider.

pointless

i think at some point porsche needs to realize that such a move is a pointless excerise. its more ugly than the already ugly cayenne. The amount of money they wasted on this, why not invest it in green eco technology for off roaders.

Inoffensive

I'm sure it will be good to drive. But it reminds me of the current mondeo estate at the back and volvo C30 on the side (rear 3/4). The nose appears to be the only thing remotely "porsche". Nice try, but not brave enough.

Proton GTi

the back looks like the old proton gti! Pointless but i am sure it will sell whatever we think

One thing you can be sure of in Auto express is aload of negative criticism of every new car idea, especially if its a prestige marque doing something a bit different. It seems to be almost uniformly read by haters. :) I think its quite pretty myself.

I agree with nickeroo, to many negative comments on this site. I actually like the look of this car, but would like to see the interior.

By desertrat2 on 28 October, 2010, 9:24am

Looks like an Audi Q5 but with a sharper look.

I will look forward to seeing one in my rear view mirror on the motorway.

By Monkeyboy76 on 28 October, 2010, 9:45am

so much negativity

Moved recently to Beirut. We see a lot of Cayennes and Panameras here. I cannot agree with all the pundits who say how ugly the Panamera is. it's simply a four door Porsche saloon, with styling typical of the marque (what's with all the 'brand' language? that's for ketchup and vacuum cleaners, surely?). If you like the 911 then surely the functionality and styling in common of the Panamera should also please? This little Cajun looks Ok to me. If people are buying the dreadful posing pouch X6's, and there are many here, how can anyone call the Porsche's 'ugly'?

Looks like a Rover 200 from back and side!! It will sell on brand alone.

By mikesaab93 on 28 October, 2010, 10:24am

i was just going to point that out

looks like a rover 200 from the back and saw your comment as writing so it is not just me then .

By coolkid on 28 October, 2010, 10:34am

is not so bad yeah....

i don't agree with the negative nancies....from a designers point of view the cajun is a nice piece of kit a beast even & a damn sight nicer looking than the cayenne which in it's current incarnation has me finally able to look at it without giggling 'moron's'....so maybe the cajun is porsche's way of saying sorry for the fugly bigger bro....still this new show car doesn't hold a candle to the smokin new land rover 2 door. finally a landie the brits can be smug about...

By marsxman on 28 October, 2010, 11:49am

Me too.....

I also thought that the resemblance to a Rover 200 was striking. On steroids.

By simon9350 on 28 October, 2010, 12:32pm

Cajun...

more like parsley.

TBH it is a lot better looking than anything porshce currently offer.

Also agree with the Rover 200 comments!

Porsche Porsche Porsche

My god Porsche i said it before stick to sports cars please.Because the last jacked up 911 did nothing for me.

By jemyd on 28 October, 2010, 1:10pm

HYUNDAI iX?

Or, Rover 200? Another porsche for people that don't like porsches.

By nlouw on 28 October, 2010, 1:14pm

i think it's pretty :)

By oliviku on 28 October, 2010, 2:48pm

I don't understand......

..... what it is the point?. But then I do rather like the look of it, and I suppose that is all that will matter to the people that buy it. Oh, that and the badge.

By jcrowley012 on 28 October, 2010, 9:59pm

Another Auto Express fantasy?

Don't worry if you don't like it, it's only another Auto Express fantasy!

By JMDonald on 28 October, 2010, 10:26pm

Simply Ugly!

I can think of much better ways of spending £28,000-£41,000 on a car!!!! An Ostentatious and tasteless car!!

By JTravolta77 on 29 October, 2010, 12:42am

Surprised Cross-Eyed Bug !?

It looks hideous. At first, I thought, "oh no, another ugly Cayenne derivative", before I noticed it had a different name. I'm never negative for negatives sake, or a 'me too! sycophant (notice 'too' is not spelt with one 'o'! that would mean you're going somewhere!) But after staring at it a long while, it slowly kinda of grows on you ... until you realised you're only trying to like it because it's got a 'Porsche' badge on the bonnet!

Why can't Porsche make cars without trying to base everything on the 911 look? The 928 and the beautiful 944 in particular were cracking looking cars. Why can't they bring back modern versions of them? They have 911's, so why not a new 944's? Now THAT would be a tasty proposition...

VAG Group

My only comments is my concern over VAGs ever increasing streamlining of engines within the group. This is undoubtably a financial masterplan, only having R&D for a selection of engines that can be slotted into any brand of the ever increasing groups umberlla of varying social status, however, for those purchasers who are brand loyal, their loyalty is not being reciprocated. When you buy a Porsche, you're buying a premium vehicle whose heritage is motorsport, soul, it's something different, it's something special. Granted, the 80's and the YUPPIES didn't do much for it's image, namely bankers and the descriptive rhyming word for those persons, however, beyond the stereotype, Porsches have always been (at least in my experience) a car that is founded on engineering excellence. I believe this is why Porsche has never really made much effort to change the appearance of the 911 - you could this brand ignorant in this respect and I on't think this would be argued.

Now that Volkswagens Automobile Globalisation (VAG) group has acquired another brand, so begins the extraction of soul.

VAG group has done excellent things with the likes of Skoda and Seat - you're essentially getting a Volkswagen/ Audi at a reasonable (although ever increasing) purchase price. This works in the favour of the consumer without question. But as a purchaser of a Porsche, who wants to pay a premium for the same engines (as good a some of them may be) that can be found in Seats, Skodas, VWs & Audis?

Perhaps VAG group understands the psychology of todays society better than any of us realise. Perhaps they know that the pursuit of demonstratable success through materialism is the aspiration of the majority. Maybe they realise that greed and living beyond means has been the major contributer to the down fall of the economic market. Maybe they realise that people just want to be seen a brand of vehicle that reflects success; maybe they realise that the majority buy on the basis of marketing excellence and not engineering excellence. Maybe they realise we can put a 2.0L TDI engine in a Porsche and get away with it on this basis.

VAG realise that society prefer what could be considered as inverted logic to a few years ago: It matters not how it drives, or performs, but the clothes that it wears.

Once, a car could be called an Audi RS2, could have a Porsche engine coupled with the performance of the same and be dressed as a subtle Audi. It was fast, fantastic to drive and gave the driver a sense of stealth - a Porsche dressed as a family estate car.
These days, a car will be called a Porsche but will have the performance of the 2.0 TDI engine it shares with it's family estate car brethren.

I fear the days are numbered for Porsches flat six masterpiece and soon, the number of engines available to the global marketplace will be somewhat limited.

We need a a 'Kelloggs Cornflake car manufacturer' - we don't make engines for anybody else...

Oh it's Miroslav on the 'photo's' More AE bullshit then!!!!!

AE you are a disgrace, do not insult my, or other readers intelligence - Miroslav is your photoshop 'expert' so do not call them photo's, these are not photo's of a genuine vehicle, these are computer generated by cut and pasting bits of other cars. So this is you giving Miroslav a brief of what you think the car will look like and him using artistic licence to come up with these images! So before everyone comments on the vehicle's appearance, just remember, it will look bugger all like this when it is launched!

VW GROUP & TESCO TAKE OVER THE WORLD OH NO !

I AGREE WITH MRWHAT101 TOTALY !

By BEREAL on 7 December, 2010, 4:00am

Pointless, as are the BMW X4 and X6

Why or why are car manufacturers bringing out so many new models to fill gaps that didn't even exist? Many X3 buyers may actually decide on an X5 as the X3 is so expensive anyway, so why bother now introducing an X4 in addition to the already-pointless X6? I can partly see why Porsche are launching a baby SUV, but the 3-door version won't be that practical surely, plus they may then end up releasing an X3 rival to go alongside their X5 and Q5 rivals.

dishonesty

I presume then that "our image" is auto express's code for something the graphics department just had a wet dream about whilst doodling with Photoshop? If so it's the sort of dishonest journalism normally reserved for gutter press, if so may the ghosts of Pomroy and Setright pee on your hard drives.

LOOKS nice

But a car for those who want to look like they go off road but never do..It does look good though and sleek.. but I prefer the Evoque also good looking but fuller looking than the Porsche.. For the same money as the bottom of the range Porsche I could get the top of the range R/R Evoque ,,Both 4x4 will have a 2L Turbo engine R/R 240 BHP and Porsche 237BHP..
