New York hails next taxi

Much-loved Ford Crown Victoria replaced by Nissan van-turned-cab

Nissan NV200

04th May 2011

It's a big deal in the Big Apple. Nissan has pulled off a huge coup by winning a contract that will see its one of its commerical vehicles become New York's next yellow taxi.

Previously the famous cabs were Ford Crown Victorias – but Nissan beat the blue oval and Turkish maker Karsan Otomotiv with a purpose-built version of its NV200 van. The 10-year contract is worth around £600m and will start in 2013.

While the Nissan MPV's looks are hardly evocative of a traditional New York 'yellow cab', the taxi is designed specifically for its role, featuring a glass roof to offer views of skyscrapers, charging points for phones, ample, flexible seating, sliding doors for easy access and satnav.

"For the first time, we'll have a taxicab that wasn't 'off the rack', but rather custom-tailored to create the best fit for the drivers, owners and passengers of our city," Taxi and Limousine commissioner David Yassky said.

Of the three finalists, the NV200 was the cheapest at £18,000 per vehicle and with fuel economy of around 25mpg, much less thirsty than the 12mpg Crown Victoria. By 2017, Nissan will offer electric versions too.

25mpg!

Although its an improvment over 12mpg, 25mpg is crap!

You don't have to be a genius to work out that fuel is one of the biggest costs of running a taxi firm. Why would they go for a car that only returns 25. I would expect at least 40mpg for a new car.

What is the point!!

Yor right 25mpg??? it should be 25km/l (around 56mpg) this are already totally outdated before they even come into use, and they look like crap, they dont have any form of charm like the old ones did.
They should go for a proper cab car like the concepts we have seen from VW

Remember, a US gallon is less than a UK gallon. To convert to UK equivalent, divide by 0.833, which means in our terms, it does approx 30mpg - I think that's not bad for what is essentially a large van with windows.

Especially if it's petrol, not Diesel

I very much doubt you'd get anywhere near 56mpg, or even 40mpg, from a London TX4. Be realistic.

To put it in perspective, see here:

Big John

The TX4 Is much bigger, this is because it has to carry wheelchairs. It is also able to carry 5 passengers whereas the NV200 only carries 3, so per passenger mile is more effeicient whilst still being disabled friendly....London 1 New York 0.

hey guys dont forget its got an auto box and its a shed on wheels so 30 mpg is pretty good going

Let's compare like-with-like here!

The Nissan in New York is petrol-engined. This is because the Americans have something against diesels and prefer to use petrol - even though it uses a lot more fuel. The EC figure for the Nissan would be around 54MPG (imperial not US) on the combined drive cycle. The same figure for the London cab is just over 35MPG and that's for the manual in each case. If I was a cabby, I think I know what I'd rather be driving!

Passenger ratio...

Don't forget 3 Average Americans normally equal about 5 ordinary sized people...

The main thing is that they have got rid of the Crown Victoria, which had that unique combination of extreme exterior size and tiny, cramped interior size.

City Mileage

Don't know what you wusses drive over in Europe but I think 25mpg for city for such a big vehicle is pretty darn good - considering most cars barely manage 19mpg here. And for stop-go NYC traffic that should do pretty well

Controversial blandness

I wonder what New Yorkers will think of this. Ken tried to erase the iconic London double decker with the introduction of bendy buses but that decision has since been overturned.
Big yellow flop!

Give me the simpler times pleeeze.

I hated it when a GM bean counter screwed up the old RWD Chevy Impala / Caprice and thusly let in the Crown Victoria for cop and taxi duty. I still drive a 93 Caddy Brougham where there is enough room in the back for 3 guys and one woman to play a hand of
canasta should they feel so disposed.
