Leak confirms reborn Vauxhall coupé is on way, based on Insignia

Here's the news Vauxhall fans have been waiting for! A leaked document from parent company General Motors appears to confirm the arrival of an all-new coupé that resurrects the Calibra badge.

The document names the newcomer and reveals it will be based on the Insignia’s Epsilon II platform. That means we should expect a two-door coupé version of the family model, with a look inspired by the GTC Concept seen at 2007’s Geneva Motor Show

This car was powered by a 2.8-litre turbocharged V6, similar to the Insignia VXR’s unit. A range-topping version of the Calibra would be likely to use this engine, and build on the Insignia’s 321bhp power output. Reports also suggest that engineers are working to improve the car’s agility by shortening the wheelbase and fitting flagship models with four-wheel drive.

Performance will be impressive, with the top-of-the-range VXR set to cover 0-62mph in less than six seconds and hit a limited top speed of 155mph. A host of smaller turbos will power lesser models. Production is due to start in October 2012 at GM’s Russelsheim plant in Germany, with sales kicking off in 2013. The original Calibra – based on the Cavalier MkIII – was built between 1989 and 1997.

Vauxhall is also working on a four-seater cabriolet, based on the Astra. GM Europe boss Nick Reilly said the car would provide a ‘halo’ for the range, and could be called Manta.

A bit 'slabby'

Is it just me or does this design look a little too 'American' in terms of styling for UK and Europe tastes? The front end looks like many american sedans. The backend is better though...

Speaking of Calibras, I still laugh my t*ts off when it rains - my neighbour has an old style Calibra and the rear end is so flat and level that it catches rainwater on the rear hatch in pools wonderfully.

This just looks like an Insignia coupe.

Opel Manta Ray...

"Reports also suggest that engineers are working to improve the car’s agility by shortening the wheelbase and fitting flagship models with four-wheel drive."

Here's an interesting idea, and I hope GM Europe are listening: Use the Vauxhall brand for GM's mainstream European models and keep the Opel monica for it's performance and luxury vehicles.

If a revised and shortened version of the GTC Concept is being considered, it should absolutely be released as an Opel Manta, and the top spec, fire snorting version should be the Manta Ray!

Ewww I've got a Vauxhall !

It looks okay but, when you pull up, somewhere, Its still only going to be a Vauxhall. If it launched in the UK it needs to called an Opel.

Its a shame GM didn't keep the Pontiac marque, for stuff like this.

Opel brand for the UK?

I agree totally with sgtgrash & Madsteve7. Given that the Vauxhall brand is only seen in the UK, isn't it time to start selling the upmarket/sporty versions as Opels here, and gradually phase out Vauxhall? Other than for reasons of tradition, it doesn't really make sense to continue with the Vauxhall brand in just one country, though I acknowledge that the some of the same models under the Holden badge are sold only in Australia.
