The city car of the future has arrived, and Renault has revealed the crucial pricing structure for its Twizy here in the UK. On-the-road prices for the innovative two-seater electric car will start from £6,690.

Interested customers can already beat the crowds by placing a £20 deposit at www.renault-ze.com, ensuring they will be contacted first when the car officially goes on sale early next year.

But the headline figure doesn't tell the whole story. The Twizy comes in two trim levels, Urban and Technic, with the higher-spec Technic costing £7,400. On top of that the monthly battery lease cost will be £40 based on a 36 month, 4,500 miiles per year agreement - equivalent to £480 a year.

We've already driven a prototype of the Twizy, read that review here, which Renault is billing as a cross between a small car and a scooter. It offers space for two, sitting in tandem, and its tiny dimensions should make it perfect for driving around and parking in town.

Powered by a 17bhp electric motor and weighing in at 450kg, the Twizy can be fully charged in three and a half hours from a domestic power socket and provides up to 62 miles of emission-free driving.

Battery Lease? Tax more like..

Why would anyone buy a car that has no tax and is very cheap to run...

...and then have to pay £40 per month for the peasure of doing so.

I think I'll just stick to my scooter.

Not So Wallet Friendly

At £1.50 a litre I would get over 3000 miles of purely "Urban" driving out of my present car, just for the "Battery Lease" price of £480 per year.

Now if someone can tell me the how many Kwh of electric is used for a 3.5 hour "Full" re-charge I could then work out a "Real World" cost of running this moped with a roof.

About as practical as a chocolate teapot!
This is not the answer to high fuel prices.

When will the industry stop trying to kid us - we dont buy it.

1) 'Zero' emissions; there is no such thing; the emissions are just given off in a different place
2) Batteries destroy the planet just as effectively as exhaust fumes; they just lay waste to huge areas of Canada and India instead of poluting the air
3) Who is going to buy a car without an engine and then lease one? What utter nonsense

Does not add up

I have a smart fortwo, at 50 mpg for that lease money I will get 3500 miles and no huge electricity bill! 'Cos to charge the battery will no doubt cost more that they want you to beleive. That is unless you have your own wind farm or solar array and have written off the install costs a a green conrtibution!!! Now, if it had a micro fusion unit - that would be good!!
