Zafira takes on S-MAX

Vauxhall seven-seater is now larger, more luxurious and better to drive

The Zafira is moving up in the world. In an attempt to scalp Ford’s S-MAX, Vauxhall’s all-new people carrier is larger, more luxurious and sportier to drive – and Auto Express has first official details.

Called the Zafira Tourer, it will sit above the current model, which will continue to be sold, and prices are likely to start at £20,000 – making it around £5,000 more expensive. For the extra money, buyers will be getting a much more desirable car. For starters, it’s better looking.

The production version is every inch as striking as March’s Geneva Motor Show concept, with a slippery shape that gets a panoramic glass roof, bold headlights from the Ampera electric car, and neat slashes in the flanks. Slim A-pillars and lots of glass help reduce blindspots, too.

Inside, Vauxhall claims “limousine-like quality and space”. And at 190mm longer than the current Zafira, it certainly has the latter. A new Flex7 seven-seater arrangement allows the third row to be folded flush with the boot floor, while the second row has three individual seats.

These can be moved fore and aft, while some models feature a middle seat back that can be folded forward and rotated, providing occupants in the outer seats with armrests. These chairs can then be moved forward or back and slid towards the car’s centre, increasing shoulder and elbow room.

Compared to the existing Zafira, the Tourer also has more boot space. It can carry 710 litres in five-seater mode (up 65 litres) and 1,860 litres (40 litres more) with all seats folded flat. Vauxhall claims it will be good to drive, too.

Underneath the skin, it sits on a front-wheel-drive chassis derived from the Insignia, with a longer wheelbase and wider tracks for increased grip and stability. The firm’s FlexRide adaptive damping system will be available as an option.

Engine choices include an entry-level 1.8-litre petrol, a 1.4-litre petrol turbo, and a 2.0-litre diesel in three power outputs. Sales will begin later this year with first deliveries in early 2012.

On a separate note...

Can you please stop posting ads which can't be stopped. I didn't want to watch the video so stop forcing your sponsors into me. NOT INTERESTED.

100% remarkable

Wow. Absolutely outstanding car. I remember saying last year about its first illustration that it was by far the best-looking MPV ever made. I am going to stand by that comment becuase since this is the real thing, Vauxhall are on to a winner!

I agree with Jim

The videos are annoying, unnecessary and noisy. When I want to read about a new car, I want to READ about it, not be presented with video that begins straight away and is embarrassingly loud in the office.
And, like all MPVs, this is still a van with windows.

Beauty is in the eye, etc etc

Quote: For starters, it’s better looking.
A bold statement, I don't think so and I prefer mine, as I don't care for the Ampera front end, the rest is nice though.
I see the (A) pillar has been reduced to give better sighting on a tight right hand corner, it could be at the expense of safety, as the A pillar is a rollover bar, and the now week (A) pillar will be the first to give way if the car ever turns over.
There are some things inside that needed looking at, but Vauxhall don't seem to contact or survey the owners, or indeed seem interested in what they as Vauxhall owners would want improving

Jeremy and video pain, both wrong

Further to my last offering, Jeremy Clarkson once said that people who bought a people carrier ( Had to ) implying that this type of car was just a family work horse, he was quite wrong of course as many of us prefer them, while mine is quite sporty (but not in the BMW M3 league) it does the job for me, and is a nice car to drive, and like many other Zafera drivers I would never go back to a small saloon.
PS, I also hate the video starting automatically, it’s a pain in the bum, and the option to turn it on should be left with the consumer

Quality Improvements - I doubt it.

Perhaps Vauxhall will greatly improve it's terrible customer care and service experience.

Whilst extolling the virtues of its new Zafira Vauxhall has a record of poor reliability on past Zafira models.
The For Life Warranty programme does not mention anything about improved customer care.

The company just exudes the same arrogance as before expecting buyers to assume all is well.

Video Gripe

In Australia I drive a car which is not available at home in the UK viz., a Honda Odyssey and this car, although smaller, resembles that. If it is as well made, spacious, adaptable and good to drive then I too think that Vauxhall are on to a winner.
My gripe with all these videos, and lets face it there are thousands of them, is that they all seem to be made by videographers straight out of college using them as a vehicle (excuse pun) for their own career progress at the expense of those who should really judge them. This little example is typical of the genre - it showed none of the interior, the seating arrangement, ease of ingress and egress, spaciousness and adaptability - all absolutely essential elements to the MPV recipe. I gave up complaining to Top Gear about all the peculiar camera angles, burning, sliding etc., because I was told the programme was not for people like me but for young people who are not interested in the finer points such as dashboard, controls layout, seating adjustment load space.
I look to magazines such as Auto Express to tell me all about the car before I visit the showroom and take a test drive.
