New 300bhp 1.8-litre engine looks set to power Alfa Romeo 4C sports car

Alfa Romeo has announced a new turbocharged 1.8-litre engine boasting 296bhp which, it’s thought, will provide power for the new two-seater 4C sports car.

The Porsche Cayman-rivalling 4C was revealed in concept form at the Geneva and Frankfurt Motor Shows and uses lightweight materials for a kerbweight of just 850kgs.

The new engine will be built at Alfa Romeo’s Pratola Serra plant in Italy starting in 2013. Alfa has announced that the 4C will begin production in 2013 too.

Following that, it’s also likely that we’ll see the 1.8-litre turbo in an upcoming SUV due for 2014 and a 159-replacing model available in saloon and estate variants for the same year.

Alfa Romeo is also planning a rear-wheel-drive saloon based on the Chrysler 300C and, although it has announced it will get V6 power, the new 1.8-litre turbo is also likely to make it into the line-up.

The new engine will be clean enough to meet the strict new Euro 6 air pollution regulations in Europe.

Shake, Rattle and Roll!

Just wait till that car comes out. It will behave like all the other Alfa's in the past, shake, rattle and roll.
300bhp in a straight line and all goes wrong around the corner.....

@lucasworld

Have You driven an Alfa in the past 10 years?
Nerver mind that, judging by the official and un-official info about the Alfa 4C, it should go around corners quite brilliantly, being based on the Dallara carbon chassis.
If you don't like the marque, go and buy something else, there's no need for Alfa-hating comments...

Go Alfa, so far so good. But hurry up and replace the 159 its well past it, and don't use cheap hard plastics in your new cars, they are not chinese

Can't wait!!

I saw the concept at Geneva earlier this year and fell in love. The pictures in the press continue to impress me and now with the news of this engine I am really looking forward to 2013... I have to agree that handling may not end up being as sharp as we'd all like it to be, nevermind quality but Alfa's aren't about that, they're about soul. Now I just have to spend the next ~2 years trying to come up with a convincing argument that this would be a great family car...
