Airport’s £50 EV plug-in

Electric car drivers parking at Heathrow can now plug in - but it will cost £50 a day

Heathrow EV charging

12th October 2011

London’s Heathrow Airport is now offering charging facilities for electric cars – but only in the short-stay car park.

So while holidaying EV owners don’t have to pay for the power used, they will still be charged parking fees of £50 per day, or £350 for a week-long trip.

Gatwick Airport also offers free charging points in the short-stay car parks of its North and South Terminals. Unlike Heathrow, it allows up to four hours of free parking while the car is charged. Neither Luton nor Stansted offers any charging facilities.

But there might not be much demand for chargers anyway, as take-up of EVs has been slow across Europe, no matter how much money governments offer in grants and incentives.

According to research by JATO Dynamics, only 283 EVs were bought in Denmark in the first half of 2011, even though the country’s Government hands out a substantial subsidy of 20,588 Euros, or £17,924.

Over the same period, 850 EVs found homes in Norway, where there’s a hefty 17,524 Euro (£15,256) incentive on offer. And only 85 of them were bought in Belgium, where drivers who make the switch from more conventional power are offered a 10,907 Euro (£9,496) saving.

Parking not EV

This is a story about the stupidly high cost of airport parking not the price of charging and EV (which appears to be free).

Anyone parking a petrol car would pay the same.

EV Subsidies

How come our stupid govenment can only offer a £5k subsidy, I guess they are NOT serious about UK motorists converting to EV?. It looks like i will have to make friends with a resident of Denmark.

More evidence of rip off Britian to go with our high energy costs.

The Old Firm at it again

Serves you right for not considering how you would be held for ransom after you bought your EV. Postpone any thoughts of buying an EV until these parasites lower their 'charging' fees to a more realistic level. Talk about gouging. But you might have known.
