TT's big brother on way

Auto Express has done it again! Hot on the heels of the exclusive official pictures of the new TT unveiled in last week's issue, we can reveal Audi is planning another coupé - a bigger brother aimed at BMW's 6-Series and Mercedes' CLS.

Set to be called the A5, the four-seater is likely to mix styling cues from the Nuvolari concept - seen at 2003's Geneva Motor Show - and the new TT. All models will get quattro 4WD, with entry-level cars priced around ΂£50,000. The range should go on sale in 2007.

With twin pillarless doors, a bold front end dominated by the trademark Audi grille and a sweeping profile, the A5 will look even more dramatic than its German rivals. Expect Audi's latest adaptive air-suspension system to feature under the skin.

Development is already underway, with engineers using A6-based mules to trial the coup΃©'s wider track and lowered suspension. Buyers are likely to have a choice of Audi's current 3.2-litre V6 and 4.2 V8 petrol engines. While most models get auto gearboxes, the DSG sequential set-up will also be available. A rumoured hot S5 could use the same V10 as the new S8 to rival BMW's M6.
