BMW 3 Series Running Costs
Overall Average Rating: 87.5%
Position in the Top 100 cars: 21st
No change here – last year the 3-Series also came in at 21. Yet a few scores jump out for the wrong reasons. Its poor ride rating is caused by the sporty suspension, while the lack of practicality is down to the tight boot and optional folding rear seats.
Running costs fail to impress: 46th is little better than average. Is good economy ruined by high servicing costs?
Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 8th)
It trails Lexus, but BMW will be delighted to see that it’s still ahead of Mercedes and Audi… just. The brand has fallen two places overall this year, and will look to reverse that trend in 2010.

The Wife and i bought a BMW 330d Msport touring in March last year. My father in-law has been into BMW's for many years and this influenced our decision when our Nissan micra was written off at the end of 2008. The performance is effortless, i have not once needed to rev the engine past 3000RPM due to the huge torque available. my one critisim of the auto box is that i've been caught out at a roundabout when the auto box was in too higher gear to give me the acceleration i needed to get into a gap. I think ultimately it was my fault with not familiarising myself with the car but it was still a scary experience. kick down also seems to take an age to happen and the traction control can also be a nightmare. If you pull away too quickly at a junction and it detects wheelspin it will cut you power for what seems like an age, probably only about 500mS but when a lorry is driving towards you at speed it can be quite disconcerting. Tyres are very expensive but i'm a firm believer in getting what you pay for and a 1700KGs car capable of 155mph plus means budget tyres are a strict no-no. Overall it manages 48MPG on a run, 38MPG around town, gets to 60 in around 6.5secs, cruises at the legal limit at 1750rpm, is totally practical being a touring model and looks very mean! The best all round car? i certainly think so!

The car itself is fine, but the run-flat tyres are awful, expensive, unrepairable, and wear quickly. The car has no grip whatsoever on slippery surfaces, despite traction control. Dealer service can be good but is too expensive, and they schedule brake fluid changes too soon. The turbo-diesel engine is generally good, but torque at very low revs is poorer than many similar engines making the car easy to stall when pulling away. I also don't like the six speed gearbox, it's too easy to get reverse instead of first, it needs a detent catch rather than a spring which can be easily over-ridden.

Just before the we were going to change the car, after 3 years, a catastrophic failure of the suspension, dsc and various other components occurred. This meant it swayed around on the road when accelerating or turning. I don't know whether it may have been caused by the excessive spinning it went through with all the snow recently, but it shows how delicate this BMW car is, if so. So I've have never got it fixed; its sitting outside while I am currently hiring a Mercedes for a month before I take delivery of my new Mercedes e class coupe.

My March 2005 Series 3 2.5i M sport Coupe was a great buy at the time having done less than 6k in 15 months. I needed and Automatic due to having a stroke and wanted something sporty. The two door coupe is ok most of the time but a bit of a problem at times.Sports suspesion is a little stiff around town(maybe the would have been betterto have the SE) but a beauty cruising. As most of its life is in town so the 2.5 litre's mpg was ok and is now becoming a bit expensive so a 2.0 litre 4 door with SE suspension is now being sort

All in all it is a superb vehicle. The 2.0D efficient dynamics engine is fast and extremely economical. Despite regular 3 hour journeys in the car I have not once experienced aches and pains so comfort is top notch too. It did suffer from an electrical problem however - the electronic steering lock sensor malfunctioned but it did not affect the car in any way and was replaced quickly and without hassle. Would I buy another? I don't think I would look at anything else.

As good as i expected. I don't like the leather seats - alcantara is so much better and more comfortable - and the fuel consumption is less than I expected - 34-37mpg, which is not great for a 2 litre diesel. Traction in snow/ice is dreadful - I can't even get out of my car park. Build quality is good and appearance better than average.
Altogether, a good car, but not the best.

My car is a convertible hence it suffers from and/or benefits from the associated design constraints.
The only problems I've had are the folding hood failed once (repaired under the dealers used car warranty), and oil consumption is high (though within spec according to BMW).
Overall, I'm very pleased with it although it is more expensive to run than I expected.

The pedals are offset that took a while to get used to but now is not a problem.
The one problem was with a sticky turbo valve. When reporting the problem to the main dealer they were not helpful and could not quickly look at the problem but the BMW breakdown people were excellent.
My firts diesel and very impressed with pewrformance and economy

Due to car been a coupe the look is superb with a great colour choice of Imola red and gloss black accents but obviously lacks in practicality with a low boot. The vehicle is fully loaded with BMW factory options so very easy to live with! Would buy another BMW except next time choose a larger diesel engine.Economy very good for this type of car

BMW 323ci personal import 2000 - a brilliant vehicle that's almost perfect except that now, in year 10 with 56,000miles and NO ACCIDENT damage, there is penetrating rust appearing in both front wings. £1500 to replace and BMW not in the least interested. This has been a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT in customer service.

Best thing since sliced bread, 3.0 diesel was amazing 7 years ago and is still better than many competitors even now with 170k+ on the clock. Not a sqeak or rattle and it still takes corners with alarming ease. Hasn't needed a clutch, exhaust or anything major in the 120k+ I have owned it. Truly remarkable car!

I knew the M3 CSL that I bought would be expensive to run and maintain to a high quality when I purchase the car over 3 years ago so although I've had a few problems with it, they've been sorted immediately and mostly under the extended warranty I took out on the car, which additionally is very comprehensive.

BMWUK are a bunch of unimaginative clerks who are unduly concerned with their contractual obligations at the expense of BMW's customer relations. My nearest dealer is geared more to the sale of financial products than to the sale of cars.
Both let down the quality of BMW's engineers.

Great RWD handling BMW especially given that is an estate. Frugal despite being a remapped 3.0d remapped :-). The only criticism I have is the run flat tyres - very expensive to replace and shockingly bad in the snow as it takes forever to get them up to temperature.
Cost: 3/5
08-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years
I researched a lot before I bought this car, I've had two BMW's before and looked at similar type cars from different manufacturers but the BMW ticked all the boxes then and still does. I bought the car outright and will do the same again in 9 years when I change it.

I have had BMW cars for the last 15 yrs. Never any problems. Expensive to buy but maint costs are low. Extremely reliable and great to drive. This current car is a 2.0 litre diesel and has plenty of torque, looks great, is a pleasure to drive and very economical.
Cost: 5/5
56-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years
Great car. M Sport spec has lots of added extras and better styling than standard spec. The runflat tyres should be an optional extra, as a set of 18" replacement tyres can easily cost £1000. BMW servicing can be pricey, but worthwhile to retain value.

My bmw 3 series touring is the biggest let down I have ever had. Its not a big car ,yet the 2 litre diesel engine struggles to get much more than 42MPG. Handling is awful at slow speed, goes where it feels. Gearbox hard to use. wish Ihad bought a Skoda.
Cost: 2/5
57-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years
Ignition was a little dodgy in starting. Resolved quickly. Clutch judders on uphill starts. Adjustment made, but not perfect.
No space for storage, & as a rep one needs lots of storage every extra is an extra cost. Need a hatch back in future.

Supplied as a Company Car, the ES model of BMW are somewhat basic & I find it unbelievable that the rear seats don't fold down for transporting occasional loads.
However it is a nice car to drive, & looks stylish even in fairly basic form.

Amazing. But then again, I've dreamt of having it for over 6 years. Only now have I been able to afford it. Bills are rather high, but it puts a smile on my face every time I look at it let alone drive it, so it's worth it.

Very good and enjoyable to drive, in hindsight the extra space in the 5 series would have been preferable, but wasn't available for the budget at the time.
More extras as standardwould have made excellent value more money

I really like my BMW 320d coupe but the economy isn't great at 40.9mpg averaged over the last 3500miles covered. I used to have an Alfa GT 1.9JTD and it average 44.5mpg for the same average use.
