Rinspeed XchangE concept teased

Rinspeed teases XchangE autonomous driving concept ahead of its Geneva debut next year

Qyuirky Swiss manufacturer Rinspeed has released first images of the new XchangE autonomous driving concept, that will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March. The concept is powered by a fully electric powertrain and features a state-of-the-art steer-by-wire system.

The idea behind the concept is to put the occupants at the centre of the driverless car. The four seats are like those found in a business-class airliner and retain the elaborate functionality allowing occupants to convert the interior into a lounge. Rinspeed’s slogan for the car is “Not even flying is better!”

“So far hardly anyone has taken this to its logical conclusion from the perspective of the driver,” said Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht. “After all, travelling in a driverless car will no longer require me to stare at the road, but will let me spend my time in a more meaningful way.”

Innovative new safety and entertainment features will enable passengers to surf the Internet or watch a film while the fully autonomous electric saloon cruises at up to speeds of 75mph. The steering wheel can also be ‘parked’ in the middle of dashboard so it doesn’t intrude on passenger space, thanks to the steer-by-wire technology – like that used on modern aircrafts.

The Rinspeed XchangE is one of many concept vehicles the Swiss manufacturer has produced, which also includes the amphibious Rinspeed Splash and Rinspeed SQuba, which was able to drive under water.
