Last year 2nd (360pts)
Mercedes finished a distant second behind Red Bull last year, but seemed strong at 2014’s first test in Jerez. The new F1 W05 looked quick in the hands of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, and Mercedes’ hybrid turbo engine was far more reliable than Renault’s.
Team principal Ross Brawn retired over the winter, but the squad still has strong technical management in ex-McLaren man Paddy Lowe, with Toto Wolff running commercial affairs. Plus, 2008 champ Hamilton and the consistent Rosberg are settled at the team and look ready to deliver in 2014.
Our verdict: Mercedes is many pundits’ pre-season favourite, and seems guaranteed to have a strong start in Melbourne. But Red Bull and McLaren won’t be too far off.
