Lotus has punched above its weight in recent seasons. It won 2013’s opening race in Australia, but slipped down the order, before funding issues emerged.

The cash shortfall has forced the team to replace Kimi Raikkonen with heavily sponsored Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado – whose reputation has been on the slide since his surprise 2012 Spanish GP win for Williams.

Existing Lotus driver Romain Grosjean put in strong performances during 2013, so he’ll be hoping the off-season loss of team boss Eric Boullier to McLaren won’t hurt its form.

Our verdict: Could be a mixed bag this year. Renault engine looks unreliable and Maldonado is a loose cannon. Still, a well sorted car would allow Grosjean to spring some surprises.
