With its friendly, unpretentious image, Sauber has long been a fan favourite in F1, but its best result in 2013 was fifth. It faced cashflow problems and was unable to retain Nico Hulkenberg. So veteran Adrian Sutil moves across from Force India, and he should be a safe pair of hands alongside Esteban Gutierrez, now in his second F1 season.

It’s a solid driver line-up, but questions remain over Sauber’s technical firepower. Strong points finishes will be vital and boss Monisha Kaltenborn will be hoping for consistency and reliability above all else.

Our verdict: It’s impossible to dislike Sauber, but it’s equally hard to be optimistic about the team’s chances in 2014. Once again it faces a very tough midfield battle.
