Mercedes Vision Tokyo space-age van concept arrives in Tokyo

Vision Tokyo concept car unveiled at Tokyo Motor Show, previews Mercedes’ driverless future and hydrogen powertrain tech

Mercedes has unveiled its forward-thinking Tokyo Vision concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. The machine showcases Mercedes’ vision of the future of driverless luxury travel.

The unique shape hints at a practical multi-purpose vehicle and it follows in a long line of Mercedes Vision concept cars that have revealed technological advances that went on to feature in future Mercedes production models.

From a design perspective, the Tokyo Vision concept is a reinterpretation of the F 015 Luxury in Motion concept. The F 015 previewed Mercedes' take on the future of autonomous driving with a mobile living space. It featured a lounge-like interior with four rotating chairs that turn to face each other.

The Tokyo Vision concept has a rakish profile with pronounced wheel arches and shielded windows rearward of the A-pillars. This is likely to allow the installation of internal interactive screens to show images from cameras or other media as we saw on the F 015.

The F 015 concept was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell drive system, and this Tokyo concept is expected to preview an updated version of that same powertrain.
