Toyota Avensis (new)

A solid set of figures for the Avensis, a car that simply gets on with the job. It won’t win any prizes for desirability, but Toyota’s Mondeo rival makes a strong case for itself as a family car buy with low running costs and good reliability. The fact that it appears ahead of the VW Passat speaks volumes for the Avensis’s engineering and build quality.

MANUFACTURER VERDICT

They never go wrong, cost pennies to run and last decades. But please, you say, can Toyota put some more fun into the driving experience of its cars? Punchier engines would help, as well.
