20Lexus IS (old)86.4%
It's a double whammy for Lexus. Not only has the new IS beaten its arch-rival the BMW 3-Series, but even the old version has pipped it, too! The IS scoops the award for best-built car, but finishes almost bottom when it comes to running costs due to its thirsty V6. Excellent comfort and reliability scores, plus decent handling, are all plus points, though.
Build Quality
THE way a car is built will determine how long it keeps that ‘straight out of the showroom’ feel. As soon as squeaks and rattles start to creep in, long journeys become a chore as you turn up the radio to drown out the din. One firm that’s got making cars cracked is Lexus. The company retains the build quality top spot with its old-shape IS. Strangely, expectations of the new IS were so high that it hasn’t been quite as impressive, managing only a seventh-place finish. Languishing at the bottom of the chart is Fiat’s old Punto. Thankfully, the newer Grande Punto is better built, but still only makes it into 83rd place. Interestingly, nine of the top 10 finishers in the build quality chart are either Japanese or German.
