Toyota Corolla (new)

For Corolla drivers, there’s one big reason for keeping hold of their Toyota – worry-free motoring. There just isn’t a more reliable used compact family car on sale, with only 15 per cent of owners reporting a fault in the last three years. It also scores top marks for build quality and running costs, plus it’s easy to drive, too. Performance and handling are less impressive.

MANUFACTURER VERDICT

They never go wrong, cost pennies to run and last decades. But please, you say, can Toyota put some more fun into the driving experience of its cars? Punchier engines would help, as well.
