Toyota Prius (new)

Overall Average Rating - 87.22%
Position in the Top 100 cars - 10th
Here’s a sign of the times. This is the first year in which enough Prius owners have taken part in Driver Power to allow the model’s inclusion in the survey, and it’s shot straight into the top 10. The champagne corks can be heard popping in Toyota dealerships all across the country.
The Prius scores brilliantly in the reliability rank – laying to rest any doubts over the complexity of its hybrid system – and, thanks to its simple auto gear selector, and finger-tip light steering, you say it’s a breeze to drive, too. The super-strong brakes, comfort and build quality are also praised. Running costs could be better, though – the hybrid system is no more efficient on the motorway than a regular petrol car – while performance and handling are nothing to shout about, either.
WINNER OF CLASS - Compact Family
What a result for Toyota! In its first year of inclusion in the Driver Power Top 100, the Prius has jumped to the very top of the compact family car class. While it’s not a conventional hatch, the petrol/electric hybrid’s size and layout mean it qualifies for inclusion – and betters the scores of some highly talented opposition. You tell us that the Prius offers a more satisfying package than Honda’s new Civic, which takes second place. Third goes to the VW Golf, while there is another Toyota in fourth – this time the dependable Corolla. We’ll see next year if the fresh-faced Auris can match the success of its stablemates. The top five is completed by Audi’s classy A3.

"They never go wrong, cost pennies to run and last decades. But please, you say, can Toyota put some more fun into the driving experience of its cars? Punchier engines would help, as well."

“Not the most exciting car, but relaxing with adequate performance, 50mpg-plus and low running costs, as well as being practical, solidly built and reliable.”
