It's an Audi A2, but not as we know it. The sharp-eyed will notice a sleeker rear spoiler and skinny tyres, but it's what you can't see that makes this car so different from any other A2 currently on sale.

The three-cylinder diesel engine is Audi's first major attempt at producing a so-called three-litre car, which can return 100km on only three litres of fuel or less - that equates to 95mpg.

To achieve such remarkable economy, engineers had to strip as much weight as possible, so air-conditioning and electric windows have gone and in come a lighter windscreen and a host of other aerodynamic improvements. The end result weighs 135kg less than a standard A2 1.4 TDi, and has a drag co-efficient of only 0.25Cd - the most aerodynamically efficient shape of any production car available.

In this drive to save weight, Audi has also ditched the power-steering, and this has a marked effect on the car's behaviour. The skinny tyres make it feel wayward and rob it of grip. In addition, the engine shuts down whenever the car is stationary in an attempt to save more precious drops of fuel, and this takes some getting used to.

When underway, though, the 61bhp turbocharged engine can deliver a top speed of 105mph and propel the A2 from 0-60mph in 14.9 seconds. Not exactly sporty, but that's missing the point. Audi UK says it is still debating whether or not to bring the super-frugal A2 to these shores. Bosses are worried about how to price the car, given that it will cost more on-the-road than its 1.4-litre TDI relation and would only be available with left-hand drive. Ultimately, though, this baby Audi has to be regarded as a significant step in the right direction.
