Eco-friendly drivers aren’t just green these days – they can be blue, too. Following Volkswagen’s Bluemotion range of frugal models, Mercedes has launched the BlueEFFICIENCY line-up with this C250 CDI.
It’s the first application of the firm’s new twin-turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine – and it promises to be clean and quick.
It certainly looks good on paper. Power is up to 201bhp, with an astonishing 500Nm of torque – yet combined fuel economy is 54.3mpg, and CO2 emissions of 138g/km mean road tax costs only £120 a year. These are huge improvements over the C220 CDI it will replace.
As with VW’s Bluemotion and BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology, BlueEFFICIENCY doesn’t just incorporate engine tweaks. Changes include a totally flat undertray, slippery wing mirrors and low rolling resistance tyres, plus steering assistance only when needed. Bosses expect every model in the range to be equipped with the eco-modifications by 2011. Performance is as strong as the figures suggest. The huge reserves of torque mean that 0-60mph is dispatched in seven seconds – faster than a Golf GTI – and top speed is 155mph.
The engine is hugely flexible, pulling strongly from anywhere above 1,500rpm, but it feels rougher than a BMW 320d at both ends of the rev range. Lack of smoothness aside, the BlueEFFICIENCY kit makes little difference to the C-Class driving experience.
It is as solid on the road as ever, with no noticeable loss of grip from the harder tyres. It’s still not as sharp to drive as a 3-Series, but makes a strong case for itself nonetheless.

After reading all of the reports regarding the new Mercedes C250 Blue motion. You all forgot to mention one very importatant thing.
Having spent my hard earned cash on a new C250CDI Within two weeks it had engine injector faults, suspension faults, steering faults, auto wiper faults, After 4 weeks in a new replacement C250CDI it also stopped without warning creating a near miss with a 40 foot truck following me. Please note these cars are not safe!!
I have a C250 blue effeciency too, well at present the garage has it because for the second time in two months it broke down. The first time in December 09 it shuddered to a halt on a motorway. The garage informed me that I had run out of fuel but the gauge showed a quarter of a tank and there was no low level warning light. They replaced whatever they needed to replace then this month - January it lost power. I`ve been informed by the garage that it needs fuel injectors and I may have to wait up to four weeks. Mercedes are aware of this problem and were replacing only one fuel injector, but now they are replacing all four. So make sure if this happens to you that you get all four replaced. Mecedes are still trying to sell this car without informing the potential buyers of the problems which I think is disgusting. Incidently, Enterprise car hire offered me a Vauxhall Corsa as a replacement!!! I refused.
Hving just walked home due to my 3 month old C250 clue eff stopping in the middle of the road I google bashed faulty C250 engines and found this page. My Merc has been in for the fuel pump recall. thankfully after reciving a letter and not running out of gas, however baggie boy is right they are still selling the cars knowing this is a problem! then doing recalls. WHY??? It did today however stop whislt driving and losse all power. I have a sneaky feeling it is the injectors as the engine is not firing on all four cylinders. I will ensure they change all of them and keep you updated. Pretty mad...considering reliability is why you buy a merc in the first place. I was offered a Daewo Matiz if it makesyou feel any better. which is why a walked home. Barstewards.
Re my above post. Just had it confirmed by Merc it is faulty injectors. They are replacing all four. 2 week lead time on the parts!
Just reading these comments, so I thought I'd add to them. The same thing has happened to my new C250 Sport Estate. It's looking like four weeks before I get my car back, I'm so annoyed.
After driving BMW's and not having a single problem, it was a tough decision to move to a Mercedes-Benz.
Having read all the press on the new C-Class, it seemed that this was Mercedes-Benz's return to form.
However, trying to buy one was another matter altogether. I had called over 10 dealers and NOT ONE took my enquiry seriously or even called me back. I ended up having to write to the head office of a dealer group who have an preferred sales agreement with the company work for. Even this group didn't call me back, but after my email they finally put together a deal.
Whether it's having to deal with the effort needed to buy one or cars that seriuosly break down after a few months of ownership, it's going to take a lot of convincing that Mercedes are a brand I should stick with.
The list of failures is growing. My 4 months old C250 CDI has broken down today and I have wasted 3 hours this evening waiting for it to be taken away on a breakdown truck. Symptoms same as reported above - sudden loss of power and car ground to a halt within yards. Fortunately on a quiet country lane and not on motorway. AA man's laptop showed diesel injector fault being reported by the engine management system. Looks like the queue for replacements is growing by the day! But how can I be sure that the garage will replace all four - they may say they will, but how do I get the evidence? Any suggestions?
This is terrible, It's amazing how many have been affected by this problem.

Update on report above dated 31 January. Dealer confirmed problem on my car is with failed fuel injectors, as I expected. Service Manager said that over 100,000 cars worldwide have faults and will all need replacing!!!!! Service parking area behind the dealers building was FULL of 59 plate C250 Blue Efficiency models all awaiting repair!!!! My car will be off road for 3 weeks awaiting spares. Enterprise car rental manager even knew about the problem. They have the national contract with Mercedes Assist to provide courtesy cars in event of breakdown. They are committed to providing a Mercedes replacement car of equivalent or better spec and size but are running short because so many are out on free loan. No hassle at all with Mercedes Assist regarding loan car. Dealer will also replace fuel pump / fix software which is a recall issue on this model. Vorsprung Durch Technik! (Oh, that's Audi, sorry.....)
I have purchased a new Merc C250 sport to be delivered on March 1st. In reading the above comments I am very concerned that within the next 2 to 6 months I will be walking home following a break down or waiting for an inadequate small car to turn up.
I have just move from 6 years of New BMW's 3 & 5 Series and they have been great cars. Have I made a mistake!!
I will post another message when it happens.
As you can see from my nick name my love are Audi's, saving up to eventually, purchase the R8. Anyone got any spare cash!!
My C250 is 5 months old with just over 7000 miles now, I experienced the same problem as described here, engine management light came on (its had the engine management recall completed that came out in Dec) and lost all power, halfway up a hill on a dual carriageway in the outside lane! I have to say though Merc Assist were great, I’m 6 months pregnant, they recovered me back to my dealership and put me in a 59 plate C180 from Enterprise whilst mine awaits the replacement injectors. I was off the road for a total of 3 hours. This is my 5th merc so I may be a little biased, but in my experience every new model of car suffers with teething problems when first launched. I still love my C250 and can’t wait to get it back as the C180 is a little gut-less in comparison . Audinige - my Hubbie has an A8 - don't get me started on the vast amount of faults we've had with that !! (inc a new engine!)
I bought my C220 less than 3 months ago with less than 3000 miles only to discover that it will not move at first then will not even start, took it to the dealer and told its the injector and will take 4 weeks. I was given a golf as replacement by enterprise and was told, while they were bringing me a benz as a replacement the injector became faulty as well, i dont believe that at all!!!!! Is there a way to get them to keep the car and collect my money back, any suggestions?
My C220 Sport (BE) broke down after 2 months and was off the road for 5 weeks in total. Enterprise offered me a Corsa too, I held out and got a CLS 320.
The dealership told me it was "most unusual Sir"
The claimed 50+ MPG is also a joke, my last 2 C270's returned an almost constant 47.6, this thing can't do better than 42.5
I ordered a E250CDI Coupe in July 2009 and took delivery in September 2010. My car failed due to the injector problem on Saturday on the way to a friends wedding. I have asked for the car to be replaced as this problem is just so wrong, these are expensive cars. I could buy a car that is more reliable for just one of my monthly payments on my E Coupe.
I have had Mercedes cars since the 51 plate and just accepted the rust, poor quality trim, sluggish performance etc because these are Mercedes and they should be great.
To say that it is acceptable that the injector will fail and be replaced is wrong
Shame on you Mercedes
Sorry, I took delivery oy this car in September 2009 not 2010 making it one of the first E coupes with this engine.
I wish I had brought the Alpina D3
I got my C250 back in November, up til now it had been great and I was very pleased. Previously had a Lexus, never once went wrong in 7 years. Foolishly I hoped the Mercedes would behave likewise.
The car itself is very good, acceleration & MPG are both superior to BMW/Audi/Lexus comparable models - but now the fuel injectors have died and I will be without it for 4/5 weeks according to my MB dealership. On the plus side my courtesy car is a S350 with less than 700 miles on the clock, so I can't fault Enterprise or MB on this.
It is however unacceptable that its a known fault and the cars are not being recalled for replacement parts prior to them breaking down.
Back in February 2010 I posted concerns about the impending delivery of my new 250 sport following all the previous comments concerns of breakdowns, engine management problems etc.
Well, since then I have received the delivery of my new car....
...It has been a joy! No concerns a great drive, quick, fuel efficient and I a real head turner with its black panoramic sun roof. But more importantly, no mechanical issues. As a result about 11 colleagues have ordered similar models.
Obviously, with supplying so many, Mercedes have had a few problems with some, fortunately to date I am running well with no concerns. It motors well beyond 140......apparently!
I'll be back if and when there's any updates.
Happy motoring!
Hi guys,
I live in Australia and bought a 2010 220CDI.... had no idea that this (blue-eff injector) problem existed and would I be right in assuming it applies only to European models? Â .... but the issue is of interest as I have one complaint about the car: Â it has a definite 'flat spot' when taking off at lights etc. It's not real bad but very irritating as it often takes a second or so for the engine to kick in. Once its going its fine. It makes no difference btw whether in standard or power mode. I took it to the dealer but they say there is no problem.
Any ideas?
Cheers Ozzie
Ten years ago, 500Nm of torque and 138g/km of CO2 from a 2.2-litre diesel was unimaginable, but this car achieves it. The C250 CDI delivers a blend of hot hatch performance and supermini efficiency – and all in a package with the usual Mercedes quality.
It’s just a shame it isn’t as refined as BMW’s 3-Series.
