Entry estate could tempt Mondeo buyers

We’ve long been fans of Audi’s A6 Avant. A mix of refinement, good looks and practicality has made it a firm favourite with our road testers.

But the car’s appeal is under pressure as big estates, such as Ford’s Mondeo and the imminent Skoda Superb, have dug deep to offer greater quality than ever –serving up the A6’s executive appeal at lower prices...

So, with this latest Avant, Audi has decided to meet them head-on.

The entry-level 2.0-litre TDI is available from £27,450. That’s less than a top-of-the-range Mondeo estate – Ford charges just over £28,000 for a TDCi Titanium X.

Clearly, the prestige of the four rings badge makes the Audi a tempting alternative – but there is more to it than that. The spacious interior feels light and airy, and the 2.0-litre diesel unit offers a tough-to-beat mix of performance and economy.

The ride quality lacks the suppleness of the blue oval’s offering, however, and the steering is not as sharp.

But while the Mondeo estate is clearly the better driver’s car, the A6 Avant claws back the initiative on the open road with its immensely refined cabin. Few competitors can match the Audi’s effortless mile-munching ability.

Rival: Mondeo Estate

Ford carrier is one of the best cars money can buy in this class, with good looks, impressive standard kit and a brilliant chassis.

FIRST OPINION

For drivers who want a practical prestige estate, there is much to like about this entry-level A6.

While the chassis isn’t as precise as some rivals, the cabin is light and airy, and very refined.

Factor in strong residuals and economy, and it’s clear why Audi should be on the list of any private buyer after a load carrier.
