
The MG3 is the marque’s future, but what about its present? The MG6 will be the first new model to wear the octagon badge since 1995.
Auto Express took the wheel during the Moving Motor Show at Goodwood’s famous hill-climb to see what customers can expect from the Ford Focus rival when it’s launched early next year.

Based on the Chinese-built Roewe 550, the newcomer has been designed and engineered in the UK at the new MG Birmingham facility at Longbridge in the West Midlands. In the coming months, engineers will update the interior and dynamics of the car, which is still set up for the Chinese market.
The bold fastback design can look a little awkward from some angles, but on the whole, its smart and stylish appearance is sure to win many admirers. Intricately detailed headlights and the optional alloys fitted to our model add a dash of style.
The interior is well built and the quality of materials good, especially the soft-touch finish lining the dash. Bosses were keen to point out, though, that UK models would get extra sporty details, such as new dials and brushed metal inserts. Stiffer suspension and tweaked power-steering should also inject the 6 with the sharp handling that has characterised MGs of the past.
As it stands, the steering is too light and there’s too much body roll – but these areas will be improved before the hatch goes on sale in the UK.
Our other concern was a slightly jittery ride, although UK models will benefit from a more comfortable and supple suspension set-up.
The 158bhp 1.8-litre turbocharged engine is the only unit available at launch, and despite some turbo lag low down in the rev range, it still manages an impressive 8.5-second 0-60mph time.
Its five-speed manual box is precise, and the well insulated cabin means the MG6 is quiet and refined at high speeds.
Economy will be around 38mpg. A more efficient turbocharged 1.9-litre diesel powerplant will follow after the initial release.
There’s no word on prices yet, but the 6 should start from around £15,000, with the flagship model around £20,000. The final production version will be unveiled in November and is expected in showrooms early next year.
If MG can deliver on all the improvements it has promised, then the 6 will be a worthy flag-bearer for the rebirth of one of Britain’s most famous brands.

This is one of the most dated cars ive ever seen released. Even new Protons look more modern. We should be very, very ashamed if this is actually british designed. What on earth were we thinking? This will not surpass double figured sales. Why would it? A brand everyone knows is more bargain basement than Tata with zero cache, and a slab sided awful design that looks as though it was based on the 1st generation Prius.
MG going bust AGAIN, unbelievable. Seriously, who the hell is going to buy this travesty? I dont think the mentally handicapped are allowed to buy their own cars without supervision.
So shoddy its almost sad..... why is that vent fitted cock eyed on the centre console?
This is very defintely not an MG. Creating and making an MG is much more that sticking Octagon bages on the frónt and back of any old banger! And whoever signed this poor thing off at Longbridge should be thoroughly disgusted with what they have done!
In fact I am a loss for words! And where Autoexprss sees bold fastback design and smart stylish appearance is a mystery to be. It looks just like liveforever says - out of date 1990s styling more like a Proton or Tata than even an Austin Morris - never mind an MG!
Who on earth will buy such things when one looks a what is available on the market built in the UK as well? I am thinking of the new Nissans and Hondas and this car is lightyears away from them.

This car looks awful,it's a mess & £20000 for the top model,they must be joking,there's so many better cars out there for that sort of money.I think the last true MG was The MGB,fair enough to move on but this is going backwards.
Maybe I'm going mad but, in silver and with bigger Wheels it looks a lot better than it did in Gold. I think they need to improve the front end; change the grill and add DLR's. Side on; side repeaters, shouldn't they be in the wing mirrors? Rear end; put a shroud over the rear wiper, shark tooth ariel. Oh and don't launch it with small wheels!
Just little tweaks like these will make a large difference. Add a 5 yr warranty, and a sub £15k price tag and this could account for 5% market share in the compact saloon/hatch segment in it's first year. But to take sales from Ford, VW, Vauxhall and the French Trio they are going to need to be well equiped and handle as good, if not better, than the Focus. If they turn out to be reliable and have a good aftercare network this will improve year on year. but it will be the MG3 that will decide MG's future!

This is the Old Mazda 626 with a new nose! the interior looks cheap. At least the last MG saloon had a retro style about it this is so out of date it is increable!

To be fair, the exterior doesn't look all that bad. I think the biggest problems are the lack of modern detailing and ancillaries...
I agree with Focus_your_mind, a few tweeks here and there would make a world of difference, but for crying out loud change the rear wiper. As has been mentioned before, it looks like a cheapo Halfords afterthought.
The interior is where the horror starts. I've seen more luxurious Yugo interiors, and i'm not kidding. That dash looks like a Cheesey Hits compilation from the last century. "A Dash of the '80s" if you will..
Not exactly awe inspiring is it! In fact, I think I'd venture to say it isn't inspiring in any way shape or form. Nolan1966 mentioned an old Mazda 626 with a new nose? I think that's being offensive and insulting to Mazdas lol. But yes, he does have a point. Series 1 Prius someone else mentioned. Crap! Even the Morris Marina looked better than this effort. The Morris Ital,(anyone remember those?), was a more "modern" version of the Marina but this concoction isn't going to do MG any favours at all. A new start for MG? I don't think so, it's back to the same routine that abounded in the '90s.

You would have to be seriously dedicated to the MG badge to consider buying this car.
Its not cheap, its not pretty, its not good - and it offers absolutely nothing that you can't get better elsewhere.
You can't knock them for trying I suppose - but after the total abandoning of the Rover dealer network when the company moved out of UK, I can't see many rushing back to take on MG.
How can British designers come up with such an ugly car - then again we did design the SsangYong Rodius ! It already looks dated and looks nothing like a modern MG should. I've been looking forward to seeing this car but having seen it and driven it at Goodwood I think I'll be keeping my MGZT a bit longer. Not only does the MGZT look better but it has a great looking interior which this car doesn't even come close to matching. It looks like I'll be buying German after all!
I think to be fair we are seeing the Chinese left hand drive version and we've been told the UK built car will have a premium interior and better handling. So I'm going to reserve judgement on those area's until the UK car is launched. What is still niggling me is the exterior issues. Let's be honest it ain't the prettiest car, or the most high tech, or the cheapest. so initially it will be competing with the likes of Kia, Hyundai, Fiat and the French trio. To do this it will need keener pricing, a 5yr warranty and they do need to improve the detailing otherwise this will be a rare site on our roads

How can you lot possibly call yourselves journalists if all you can do is rehash publicity material, and offer no sensible opinions of your own.
In this case, the MG is blatantly ugly and ill conceived, which you should have made this clear. Your thinly veiled manufacturers' handouts are really not worth reading.
It just needs a few minor cosmetic tweaks and it could be a winner. Kinda looks like a scaled down BMW X6 from the back but in this case it looks good. The front definitely needs a tweak but the basis is there to make a good looking car. It is a radical departure from MGs of old and certainly not one for MG purists but if its judged on its own merit, its quite good. I do have a concern over MGs new naming system though. MG6? MG3? Sounds like they are ripping off Mazda. Say MG6 and Mazda6 quickly and you'll get what i mean. Lawsuit anyone?
Until we can get behind the wheel of a final UK-specification production model, it’s hard to make a fair judgement on the MG6. As it stands, what we have here is a promising start, but there are too many minor problems for it to stand out in a very competitive sector of the market. However, if engineers can deliver on their performance promises, then the 6, and MG as a brand, both have an extremely bright future.
