MG6 Saloon

We see if MG's new four-door makes more sense than the hatch

Would you pay more for a saloon than a hatchback? MG is hoping buyers will, as this new four-door version of the 6 carries a £500 premium over the five-door.

According to the Chinese-owned firm, having a traditional three-box shape alongside the hatch will lure in cash-strapped fans of the BMW 3-Series. But is it worth paying extra for?

Well, the saloon offers more boot space than the five-door – it’s 25 litres bigger, with a huge 498-litre capacity. There’s still room under the floor to upgrade the standard space saver spare for a full-size wheel, too. Plus, the rear seats fold down to expand the load bay further.

Everything else is shared with the five-door, so the sole engine choice is a 1.8-litre petrol turbo: the car’s weakest link. This 158bhp unit is an extensively reworked version of the old Rover K Series. But despite the turbocharger, it doesn’t feel powerful enough. A car sold as a sports saloon needs more shove, even if that comes from a diesel (due at the end of next year).

Rewarding

The ride and handling are much better. As with the 6 hatch, MG’s British engineers have worked to ensure good body control, and a ride that isolates pothole shocks and is even over undulations.

The result is a car that’s rewarding to push, but also comfortable at lower speeds. It’s just a pity there’s no sixth gear to reduce motorway revs and boost the 35.6mpg claimed economy.

Inside, there’s a modern feel, but the buttons are slightly ill-fitting and some of the plastics feel hard and flimsy to the touch.

The base saloon starts from £15,995, and gets the same spec as the hatch version, with alloys, air-con, traction control and a hill hold function. For £17,495, the SE adds sat-nav and front parking sensors, while the £19,995 TSE comes with a sunroof, leather, Bluetooth phone connection and a rear parking camera.

MG reckons the saloon will rival used examples of the 3-Series and Audi A4, and bosses are specifically targeting buyers by advertising the newcomer on second-hand car websites.

Used A3/3 series value/dynamics?

Comparing your brand NEW car as Used car sounds like a poor start and comaring it to a BMW/A3 sound like wishfull thinking. it all smack of lack of confidence.

Undercut the Koreans

I predict that these MG's will shortly be selling with a starting price of around £12K to undercut the Kia Cee'd.

Price can really be the only selling point.

Filz123 - I've had a Saab 9-3 and, believe me, you wouldn't.

Not unless you want a meaningful, lasting and expensive relationship with your dealer.

owning an MG GT

I've just taken delivery of a new MG6 GT and it's a great car. Huge fun to drive and much more enjoyable to own than the Audi A4 I part exchanged, which was by far the most boring machine I've ever owned. I wasn't even going to consider one, but tried it and laughed out loud on the test drive, booting it around country roads. Fantastic! Honestly, to all you doubters, just drive one, and then see what you think.

Owning an MG GT

Bishop has done well, having taken delivery. On the right, the summary says 'On Sale: November'. Maybe AE should stroll down to their local dealer?
I wonder what diesel engine it will get? Any ideas? Would it be something worthwhile like a Beemer?

Looks

Well the front looks like an old Seat Toledo but the inside does look nice. I can't believe its not a 6 speed! Thats stupid these days. I dont think its going to sell very well at that price. I wouldnt buy a saab either, terrible cars and always in the servicing bay for repairs to the enginer!

Mandarin Gameplan 6

You'd have to be brave to buy one. I like tried and tested machinery. Also, if it's your own money, what will it be worth in three years/30K miles?.

MG Rethink...

Ok, so it's not bad to look at and the interior design is ok too, even if the materials used to manufacture it aren't quite up to scratch. MG's biggest mistake is to offer only one choice of engine. Even that would not be such an issue if the MG6 was available with a 6 speed option.

My advice to MG would be to get their skates on and negotiate an engine supply deal with a major Japanese manufacturer such as Honda, Nissan or Toyota for the life of this model. It would give them instant access to a range of reliable and economical powerplant's right now, thus allowing the MG brand to develop a good reputation for reliability and versatility as well as enabling MG's Chinese owners a wee bit more time to develop their own engines.

MG also need an estate version of the MG6 at some point, preferably sooner rather than later. If they are clever with the design they may even steal away sales from the Skoda Octavia Estate.

Needs a different engine

The way I see it, this car's biggest stumbling block is its thirsty petrol engine. With no diesel or small-capacity petrol turbo in the range, figures of 35mpg and 184g/km are simply not competitive. And is it just me, or does this car (and the hatch) look like an old Proton Persona?

By LotusFan92 on 15 June, 2011, 11:12pm

hummmm

I actually like the saloon, racy red or black it actually looks good, the saloon looks better than the hatch and the shut lines are imressive. However a 5 speed box, thirsty petrol engine (but not apparently that fast either) and 20k for all the toys seems like too much money. Would I, I'm thinking, but unsure. A used 2r old Jaguar XF for a 19k, with all those toys, beautful, warrantied for a year and a six speed box, uber comfort and reliabilty will probably win on the day.

Lesson MG get a me a diesel with a six speed box, 5 yr warranty and a price tag for all this in top spec for £17/18k and you'll attract so many more buyers. I think sgtgrash makes a good point, buy in a reliable Japanese diesel and gear box!

Claimed economy

Pfft .... 35.6mpg from a new car is unacceptable. my 2001 Pug 206 1.1 can average over 50mpg and I too don't have a 6th gear. MG (China) shouldn't have released any car until they were sure it wouldn't ripped apart by the press which it of course will.

You will NEVER see this car reviewed on TopGear/FifthGear, if it is I'll eat my words but this car is a failure and shouldn't have been released ... they should have released a whole fleet of models to entice the public, not one crappy saloon/hatchback!

By jduffy1988 on 16 June, 2011, 11:30pm

The car has potential..

I like the concept but the front needs a complete rework.. Mostly the grill it needs to say HAY LOOK AT ME I'M A BOLD STYLISH MG ,.. Bigger wheels... maybe lose that crease down the side by following through the lines from the wheel arches .. with bigger wheels it could look a lot nicer with not a lot of changes..

By liverpool on 17 June, 2011, 12:40am

Looks better than 5dr

Certainly worth £500 more than hatchback in looks alone. But still looks more like a Proton than MG to me

By erly5 on 19 June, 2011, 10:20pm

Really, well don't buy any new car then!! Over the years (apart from safety and crash testing) car makers have increasingly been using the first few thousand buyers to find the faults with the car. This saves them millions! Some French cars are sold and fault codes to fix electrical gremlins can take weeks, even months, meaning your new car may not even be usable if it's one of the first affected ones.

As for the MG6 I've booked my test drive tomorrow and I'm going open minded, if it's a pig I'll be honest, if it's brilliant I'll be purchasing one. They've only got the hatch for drive but I'm after the saloon. Still shame there is no diesel :(

Clive on Bishop taking delivery..

Hatch available now, saloon from next month

By Focus_your_mind on 20 June, 2011, 2:16pm

OMG doubters you're missing out!

Wow, wow, wow the thing is way better than anyones credits. Ok so agreed about the handling, it's great. However great logical layout, great driving position, fab kit list and very hi tech dash, minus an annoying beep for eveything (which plagues French and Japanese cars) the things looks so much better in the Flesh. Good cluck from the doors, push button start, even the bonnet gets dual gas raisers, rather than a cheap metal rod. The ipod connection is about the most logical I've seen and the sat nav was great, as were the menu options and functions too You can forgive it a 6 speed box, as it felt well spaced my only gripe is no diesel. But heart over head, I loved it mmm what to do? I'm thinking saloon, in Black, White or maybe even Red!

By Focus_your_mind on 22 June, 2011, 4:11pm

Isn't it just....

Isn't it just a re-skinned Wangding Jonny Potatoe Toothpaste Beauty Slalom? Oh, no, I forgot, it's got stiffer suspension on it.... so the windscreen will crack first, closely followed by the body. Obviously, all this is subject to the electrics enabling the owner to start it - just ask any owner of any Chinese motorbike about Chinese electrics... MG my armhole, they should have let this poor abused marque pass away in peace.

Much better than you think

I always find comments on forums quite baffling - who's behind them? It appears most negative remarks about the MG6 have been made by people who have only ever seen the car on their computer screens. I drove one 2 weeks ago at Silverstone, and although I only put in a few laps I came away most impressed. The hatchback looks 20 times better than the saloon and handles quite superbly; I found it impossible to get it to unstick in corners, hard though I tried. The gripes about the switchgear are becoming an 'urban myth'. Nothing wrong or unpleasantly cheap looking at all. My only criticism is that the car could do with more power and that the brakes had largely faded by the time I drove the car, probably from a hard day's testing. I will definitely consider buying one when it comes to Spain - whenever that is. Having looked at the boring Golf, the tacky Vauxhall interiors, the truly ugly MINI Countryman (drove one and was not impressed) I think MG have a decent saloon. By the way, I never thought much of the MGF, so I don't consider myself to be a blind MG fanatic.

FIRST OPINION

Judged on its equipment and handling alone, the new MG6 saloon is a decent alternative to a used 3-Series. It has a massive boot and attractive styling, too. Inside, the car trails in terms of material quality, but the main problem is the lack of shove and poor economy of the 1.8 turbo engine. Even three-year-old units from BMW and Audi are better. Next year’s diesel may be the answer, but the space and kit on offer will draw some floating buyers to the four-door.
