Finally, after all the boring designs and drives that Toyota has, a worthwhile car. Still too Japanese for my eyes but nonetheless good enough. My concern is the 4.2 m length sounds too small. I'll wait to see it live before I decide.
Not a bad effort, more warm performance than hot, though. And those tyres look too narrow, as can be seen in pic 1.
I know this was a conscious decision by Toyoya/Subaru but they just look odd...
Now theirs a suprise.
Another boring Toyota design.
I really liked the look of this car before... but that front perspective picture looks rather like a Hyundai Coupe... the inside is spartan, and call me old-fashioned, but it doesn't even have a speedo dial... and its priced at £30k for this 2+2... you must be joking! even it's performance sounds very soft from the review. I'm afraid it sounds too much like the Toyota's I've got to know over the last few years. I guess the Subaru is going to be the real thing...
Big-big-big Bummer…. after seeing the concept two years ago. Has that become Toyota’s policy, making people drool over a concept, then come up with a very generic-looking coupe? The original designer must have harakiri’d himself by now I guess. The Subaru version will look 99% identical. Perhaps the companies should fuse.
my chipped 172bhp punto evo will give it a run for its money
for 11grand ....you must be joking at 28k
Still looks a bit old fashioned and boring. as for being "a cut-price Porsche Cayman rival" Your having a laugh. Who writes this rubbish?
@bluequake.... a doubt your punto would give it a run. it would give it a laugh lol
Narrow tyres - em, nothing wrong with that. More steering feel, less aquaplaning in the severe wet, more grip in snow and ice - let alone more fun handling in the dry when you push it and the back slides.
The current obsession with 'fat' tyres on cars is actually slightly wrong - any keen driver can tell you that....
Re: chipped Punto - yeah, and I bet you it's chavvy and had add-on LED lights LOL
Where do Toyota get their designers? I cannot think of any current Toyota that looks even half decent. They really need a good kick up the backside and try to come up with some good design. I had a 1984 Corolla that I loved and it even looked great at the time. But today, I wouldn't give you a thank you for any of their models.
dan gers... F Y I
.it is a new evo punto turbo 60 reg standard but with angel tuning remap
up from 135 to 172 bhp and 45 nm more torque ...
sees off hell of a lot of so called gtis
AWD, turbos and high grip tyres is exactly what people want Toyota. Get with it. I can't believe we waited so long...and this is the result. (Not too happy). I love the interior (GTR inspired), but the exterior looks a bit 'Korean' - i.e average. Sorry for being so harsh, but I know these guys (Toyota) are capable of doing a lot better.
Boooo!!! what happened to Toyota??? Mid 90's Balls out coupes like the MR2 Turbo, the Supra, and the mild but still quite potent Celica. As said above it looks Korean or even a little MG (Chinese) which is not a good thing at all. I think they need to have a look at what Japanese rivals Nissan are doing with their performance range. And at £28,000 you can get a more powerful 2.0 Audi TT which will hold its value or for £1000 more a BMW Z4. Must try harder Toyota....
1, Spartan interior? I would call it functional and ergonomic, what exactly would you like to see?
2, It does have a speedo dial, to the left of the tachometer, which itself contains a LED digital speed display.
3, Don't know where you got the £30k price from as Toyota have not released that information but the guesses have been around £25k.
4, You can get the Subaru if you want but the only difference between the two is cosmetic. Same car, different badges.

I just wonder if Ford are going to make thep drop the GT badge.
They did make Ferrari change the name of this years F1 car afterall, as if anyone could really be mistaken that they were buying a truck and not a racing car.
I'd certainly be disapointed if I thought I was getting a GT40 and ended up with this.
Time will tell I guess.
You can see the specs and new press release photos that just came out today here:

Personally, the car looks awesome, frankly I'm a bit surprised at the low power output I was expecting the Subaru to have an official upper spec with about 200kw. But from what the insiders at Toyota have been saying the car is being designed to be modded. I guess they're setting up the basics and letting the individual owners determine what power the car should be putting out.
cabin looks v classy understated, i think rear three quarters view it looks brilliant, side view v good too, front end let down, though may look better in the metal. 200bhp more than adequate imo, ie, affordable insurance, tax, running costs etc., i think toyota could be on a winner here tbh. v interesting mechanics compared to usual boring & sounding 4pots. why didnt toyota show it in a decent colour, red should be good on it i think. come on lads, see the bigger picture here, toyota have to be commended for fresh approach to things, it might even rid us of that most over rated car of all, that bloody awful & ugly scirocco, plus all those horrible megane ' coupes ' !!!.
Judging from the review, the thing is WAY overpriced, and at 2,662 pounds its hardly a lightweight. Just another front engined monstrosity with two squished in rear seats.
Wouldn't buy another Toyota anyway after getting stung with the purchase of an MR2 Spyder. Toyota continues to stonewall re engines suddenly disintegrating in the early models. I've been bloggin' 'bout the Recall King at http://www.uc2.blogspot.com
It's simple (I think): although overpriced, the reason this car is what it is is to provide a fun-to-drive car. If someone is serious about fun, then it must be RWD. If handling is paramount, front-to-rear weight ratio is important (ask BMW), and thus a reasonably light engine up front, drive in the back. And if you like to drive at the limit, and assuming you don't have your own personal race track, it's nice to have those limits not too high (hence narrower tires). 2600 lbs. these days - to meet government crash standards for four occupants - is relatively light; not a featherweight to be sure, but not bad. Throw in the mix fuel economy standards, etc., and voila: the GT86/BRZ/FR-S as is. I'm sure that they've left space for a turbo - heard of STi? I've no doubt that this will be a fun car to drive, and tune-able if so desired. I'm just saddened that they don't have a seatbelt in the middle back seat (our family is now five) .... Heard of STi? ...
I was looking forward to The G86 at the price originaly quoted which was £25000 ish ,I am on my second from new Celica the present one which is 6yrs old,and was hanging on in the hope of purchasing the G86, but at between £28000 & £30000 I will have to forget it,and look for something else. I also think the front end looks a bit dated, I guess its taken such a long time to produce from the time it was designed.
I saw the car in the flesh at the NEC last night. It looks so much better in real life. These photos don't do justice to the front view and the instrument cluster was much more attractive than the one featured in these photos. Also that big blank space had a SatNav unit in it. It look compact, but has enough room in the back seats for 5ft people - albeit with limited room under the passenger seat for feet (they need height adjustment on the passenger seat to solve this. I think it will prove to be a good option for those wanting a sporty car than can carry kids in the back.
And it will start at £25k apparently with SatNav and Leather being the main options. HID will be standard.
Shame its so pricey.
Looks nice ................. from the distance. Tyres are far too narrow (205 or 215 on production car) does not give the car the agressive stance and at £30k plus extras, you are having a giraffe! Previous attempts by Toyota to sell us a hot coupe went down like a ton of turd, remember the Paseo? Well done Toyota, you have just written your own epitaph with this car before it even hits the road.
Toyota knockers, here we go again, in unison please:
"It's just another boring Toyota styling exercise and it looks just like a Corolla".
The new Toyota GT 86 is not just a fun, rear-drive coupe powered by a charismatic boxer engine. This joint venture with Subaru has added a great, fun car to Toyota’s range while injecting some rear-drive spice and variety to Subaru’s AWD line-up. But more so than that, these two cars will make the world stand up and take notice that Japan has not forgotten how to make a great driver’s car that looks the part, and doesn't break the bank in the process.
