Peugeot 607

While the flagship isn't slated for sale in the UK, an exclusive drive on British roads gave Auto Express the chance to try the engine that will power the forthcoming 407 Coupί¿½ - and get to grips with the revised 607 at the same time.

New headlamps, revamped bumpers and a fresh interior - featuring hi-tech sat-nav - add to the 607's appeal. But the biggest change comes courtesy of uprated suspension and revised steering, which vastly improve ride and handling. The engine is as impressive as we had expected, too, giving smooth acceleration, while the five-speed auto box provides crisp changes. This is easily the best version of the 607 we've driven.

Delivering 207bhp and 439Nm of torque, the oil-burner lacks the power of similar units from Mercedes and BMW, but it's a strong performer and complies with Euro IV emissions rules. Further environmental gains are possible with the optional particulate filter. Economy figures have yet to be revealed, but the powerplant is tipped to re-turn nearly 40mpg.

Both six-speed manual and five-ratio automatic boxes will be offered in the 407 Coupί¿½, which is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month before going on sale in the UK in December. We can't wait to try it out.
