Meet BMW's fastest-ever road car. Capable of hitting 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds and with a top speed of more than 200mph, the new M6 is even quicker than the M5 supersaloon.

Lighter, lower and leaner than its sibling, the V10-engined four-seat coupé is a showcase for BMW's M division and its engineering expertise.

Visually, there are some obvious differences between this and the standard 6-Series. BMW has given it a unique set of alloys and individual detailing, plus a carbon fibre roof. This weighs 45kg less than a steel panel, and helps lower the car's centre of gravity by 60mm compared to a 6-Series.

That's a major asset when it comes to the dynamics, which are further improved with a stiffened front subframe, additional rear strengthening and tuned suspension bushes. This is all aimed at delivering an even more intense driving experience than the M5.

By and large, the M6 succeeds. It feels lighter and more nimble with less weight transfer through corners, and better body control. It's a very exciting car to drive, but the engine dominates the experience. The mighty V10 delivers huge thrust through the mid-range, propelling the M6 along with Ferrari-rivalling acceleration, accompanied by a distinctive engine note. There are still flaws in the package, though. The speed-sensitive steering needs more weight, the M6 jars on bumpy roads, especially if you opt for sport damper settings, and there's too much complexity - who needs 11 gearbox modes?

Nevertheless, BMW will have no trouble shifting 400 per year; deliveries start now and the waiting list is already 12 months long. But to our eyes, that ΂£80,755 price looks steep.

FIRST OPINION

Just like the M5 with which it shares many underpinnings, including the seven-speed SMG transmission and V10 engine, the M6 is a technical tour de force. Hugely fast and stunningly well controlled, it is enormously capable. Whether it justifies the £18,050 price premium over the four-door is a matter for well heeled buyers.

AT A GLANCE

Although the M6 has much in common with the M5, it has its own character, aided by the fact it's 45kg lighter, has a 108mm shorter wheelbase and lower centre of gravity.
