I can sympathise with you Mat, about your range anxiety. For those that cannot, imagine that you have a petrol/diesel car and the amount of petrol/diesel pumps available now are a thing of the past. There are no pumps for over 25 miles from where you live. In fact, the nearest at 16 miles is too expensive as the people that run the pumps/supply the fuel know that people are struggling to find somewhere to fuel up, so they charge the earth for it.
I live out in the country and until December last year that was the scenario I had to contend with. A 25 mile journey to reach supermarket priced fuel instead of the over inflated -4 to 5pence a litre more- local (at 16 miles) prices.
In principle I like the electric cars being available. Of course, it's unlikely I will ever own one as the prices are way out of my league. And lets face it, second hand, how long will the batteries last once I own a 3 or more year old example? I know they have to start somewhere, but someone needs to make them cheaper, and without the range anxiety.
The Ampera (crap name) and Fisker Karma to name two with range enxtending petrol engines -yes, I know how they operate- are a more viable solution for the short term. What about when petrol runs out or becomes too expesive for the majority of road users, trying to get to and from work?
Public transport is an expensive joke. It wouldn't cope with the demand, look at the rail network and how they are NOT coping!
Apologies for the length of this, but, I wanted to make a point.
