There's simply no stopping the BMW 3 Series. It reigns supreme in the compact executive class, after claiming its third consecutive win – no mean feat in such a closely fought sector of the market. Although rivals come thick and fast, the 3 Series has the measure of them all. Whether you want a saloon, coupé, convertible or estate, there’s something for you – and they all work to perfection.
While most really good cars excel in one or two areas, the BMW leads its competitors in virtually every department. The beautifully balanced rear-wheel-drive chassis gets all of the attention, delivering the most engaging and rewarding dynamics in the class. But the engine line-up is even better.

The punchy diesels and smooth-revving petrol powerplants all share one crucial ingredient: superb economy. And while the firm’s EfficientDynamics technology is now an established part of the motoring landscape, it’s still at the forefront of the industry. It uses active aerodynamics, stop-start technology and brake energy recuperation to boost fuel returns and help slash emissions. This makes the 3 Series difficult to ignore in the all-important company car market, where drivers are taxed based on their vehicle’s price and CO2 output.
And after seeing off Mercedes’ revised C-Class in the past few months, there’s clearly plenty life in the BMW yet.
Our pick: The 320d SE is a fine all-rounder. It promises emissions of only 125g/km, despite offering 181bhp for lively performance. SE spec serves up the finest balance between price and kit.

Although the 3 Series is the best compact executive saloon, buyers in this market aren’t restricted to a four-door. Audi’s A5 Sportback provides unrivalled style in this sector. With its sleek profile, and the added practicality of its five-door body, it appeals to the head and the heart.
