Volkswagen Golf GTI

Ask any of our road testers to pick a car from our line-up to live with every day, and VW’s Golf GTI would top the list. Our reigning Hot Hatch champion isn’t only practical, though – thanks to sharp handling and a strong turbocharged engine, it can still get pulses racing.

The GTI is no lightweight, but its 207bhp engine provides impressive straight-line performance, and with 280Nm of torque from as low as 1,700rpm, it’s incredibly flexible.

The chunky steering wheel and gearlever feel great to use, while the six-speed box has a slick action.

On the road, few cars are as quick from point-to-point or offer as much reassurance on unfamiliar routes. The GTI also effortlessly blends comfort with composed, capable handling. However, on the track it doesn’t fare so well. It’s frustrating that the traction control can’t be fully disengaged, and the system’s constant braking of individual wheels punishes the discs and pads; hot laps need to be kept to a minimum.

In terms of desirability, the Golf is in a league of its own. Inside, the traditional tartan sports seats are comfortable and supportive, while fit and finish is excellent throughout. And when it comes to kerb appeal, the GTI’s understated looks and distinctive alloys set the hot hatch template.

If you want a car that will put a smile on your face on your favourite back road, and also cope with motorways and city commutes, the GTI is an incredibly talented choice.
