Caterham has announced order books for its new back-to-basics Caterham 7 160 are now open, with its price starting from £14,995 for the car in component form and from £17,995 fully built.
The Caterham 7 160 – named the 165 in the European markets – uses a 660cc three-cylinder turbocharged Suzuki engine producing 80bhp, enabling it to complete the sprint from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 100mph.
Built for charm and handling finesse, rather than outright performance, the 160 has live-axle rear suspension and, combined with the low kerbweight, Caterham says the Seven 160 will ‘embody the pioneering spirit of early Sevens and represent a new entry-point to the Seven range’.
Caterham Technology & Innovation (CTI) was also involved in the development of the sports car having tuned to the Suzuki engine from the standard output of 64bhp to 80bhp. CO2 emissions and fuel economy were also boosted in the process and the three-cylinder engine also complies with EU5, EU6 and JC08 emissions regulations.
“As the Caterham Group as a whole grows and expands into new sectors and industries, our commitment to keep evolving the Seven is very much alive,” said Caterham Cars CEO, Graham Macdonald. “The 160 offers something truly different to the entry-level market. It’s more economical, more accessible and every bit as fun on the road as other Sevens but has its own unique personality.”
Production of the Caterham 7 160 is expected to begin in January 2014, with deliveries likely to commence in the spring.
