The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), otherwise known as the Detroit Motor Show, opens annually on a date in mid January. In 2014 the party has kicked off with the first press preview day on January 13 , and the show wil be open form January 18-26 for the public.
One of the world's major international motor shows, the Detroit event takes place at the giant Cobo Centre in the heart of Motor City's downtown area. It typically previews the biggest new car launches, concept cars and new car technology that will define the global automotive industry over the coming 12 months.
The Detroit Motor Show's location is significant as Detroit, Michigan, is the spiritual home of the US car industry. Chrysler, General Motors and Ford, the 'big three' North American car manufacturers, are all based in the Detroit area and they traditionally use their home motor show to showcase their latest products to the world.
Non-domestic car makers also place great importance on the Detroit Motor Show as a crucial gateway to the lucrative North American market and the likes of Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, Honda and Lexus also have a history of holding major new model launches at the show.
The line-up for the 2014 Detroit Motor Show was predictably strong with the new Ford Mustang and Mercedes C-Class making their world debuts. Audi showed its Crossover concept car, Lexus had the RC F coupe concept and the BMW stand showcased the M3 and M4 models to whet the appetites of performance car fans. Volvo, meanwhile, unveiled its XC Concept - a car that will drop a heavy hint as to the design of the forthcoming new XC90 SUV - Toyota had a good stab at stealing the show with its FT-1 concept.
